Windows 7 ISO - to download or not?

Post by winds »

Hey guys
So I just bought myself a new toy to play with :) A new PC! However I did not purchase an OS with it, and was just hoping to download an ISO of Windows 7. Specifically the Professional x64 bit version. However i've been reading conflicting arguements on whether that actually works or not. Some people say it isn't possible because Windows 7 auto checks if it's a legit copy or not. So I was wondering if some people with experience on the subject can tell me the pros and cons of downloading a non-legit copy of it, without getting into the debate about whether this is morally wrong or not please. If this topic goes against forum rules, i'm sorry!

Uh yeah... talking about stuff that can't be bought new anymore is a gray area, but out and out talking about something that's on the market right now and has only been out a month or 2? I don't exactly have a lot of love for MS either, but come on man.

You can do it, but you should know that it's risky business. I've heard that a lot of people have downloaded pirated versions with malware built-in, not to mention that the cracks people use could stop working in the future. I'd really just be worried that your system could crash at any point.

I say buy original
its a new pc, and windows 7 is new
legit is always better, there are no worries or faults in it. Even if such things exist you can complain.
Otherwise, get XP its damn stable for a Windows machine

I would just buy it. Get a copy of it that they call "for system builders" from New Egg or something. It's a lot cheaper that way.

OEM.

or if you dont' want to pay for an OS, then get a free Linux build. Or don't talk about warez on here. Not cool.

Thanks, I was just looking into this. It's not a terrible option, however OEM means that OS is tied to your motherboard, if I ever decided to upgrade my mobo, or had to replace it, I wouldn't be able to install windows 7 using this same disc, would i? I did hear its possible by calling microsoft and telling them your mobo failed and had to replace it, in which case theyll activate it for another installation. Is that true?

Just go ahead and download it. Make sure you're getting a good distro that has the authentication cracked.

There's no reason reason to support Microsoft....so if you're set on using a Windows operating system you might as well pirate.

7 is alright if you're wanting to get the most out of direct x 11 games but XP is still king IMO

sigh. I hate to open this can-o-worms, but... if you want a product made by Microsoft, then I suspect that THAT is a reason to support Microsoft. Maybe that's just my way of thinking...

There's the hassle of using the cracked version. Finding the trust worthy download and hoping it wasn't tampered with, messing around with the crack, and then worrying about the crack becoming detected (they usually always eventually become detectable through update). I think it's $110 for the OEM version, that's not really that much. I'd rather pay the money to avoid the hassle, and I have. And don't worry about it being tied to the board or whatever. If you're only using it on one computer, you're good. At the most you'll have to call up Microsoft and get a code to reactivate it, which isn't a big deal.
