Laptop IDE drive in an xbox

Post by DNT 2.5 »

So, I have been looking for ways to shed some poundage off of my Big black xbox, and I thought to myself "I wonder if I could use a laptop drive instead of the large original hard drive"
my Xbox is Modded with the Executer 3.1B modchip, I also have the AID disk.
So, would it be possible to replace the large drive with a small laptop hard disk?
If so, could someone be nice enough to post some schematics for an adapter?

Something like this should do the trick for you.

Ooh, that's a very cool little find. A little support or 3.5 to 2.5 cage and that would probably be great.

That would work for the person who wanted to do it with a PS2 fat as well. They'd just need to attach some spacers to hold it steady in the PS2.

Yup that's the way to do it. You can also totally remove the dvd drive with a bit of tinkering on the bios, I don't have a link for you, but google shouldn't have a problem with it.

Could I also use a laptop IDE DVD drive with it?
I found an Adapter, will the xbox give me an Error if I put in a different disk drive?

I don't recall how exactly it works, I'm not sure if it'd be possible or not. Personally depending on what your doing I wouldn't bother, with a modded xbox theres not much need anyways.
A easy way to plug one in externally would be pretty slick though.

Edit- did some looking. Apparently you can use any dvd drive, except you can't play retail xbox games with it, it sounds like you can play burned games though.

It does need to be a slim as possible, thanks for the Info, That means I CAN use my Slot loading DVD drive, You will see what I am doing in a couple months in the Hacks/Mods forum.

You can replace the drive, but like toyrobo said, it won't play xbox games (due to the same reason xbox games can't be read in a standard DVD-ROM drive.). You can replace the drive with one compatible with the xbox drive firmware but it would be one similar to the versions that are already used in the xbox anyway...

Ok, It should still read DVD movies and play backups,I could always rip them using my other Xbox and FTP them to the Hard drive, and when I run out of room I could just use a DVD-R right?
