I use Utorrent. I think torrents are pretty good for getting a lot of stuff at one download, so I don't see anything wrong with it except for the legal issue which is another story.

Here's some tips I give to customers when they ask about torrent stuff:

Use Firefox with the Adblock Plus add-on to get rid of 95% of the ads.
Utorrent is a fast/low overhead client.
Isohunt indexes tons of smaller sites as well as most big ones. It serves most of my purposes.
If you're into HQ anime, Bakabt recently lowered it's ratio to .5 and increased their freeleech list.
I've used TorrentPump with success where others came up short.
As mentioned, if you're looking for Japanese anime, doujin games, manga, etc Tokyotosho is awesome.
Sort by Seeders (S at the top) to get the fastest/best download.
Check the comments section before downloading anything.
If there's a .EXE or .SCR file included in the download, upload it to virusscan.jotti.org to check if it's OK before double-clicking on it, or run it from a virtual machine.
If you want the best speed/quality/selection for specific types of files, you can't beat private trackers. Just keep your ratio up or everything will stop. If you build your ratio too high, your ISP may complain/disconnect you (at least in Canada) as uploads cost them way more than downloads.
Video Files that have T/S, Telesync or Cam are shit. SCR/Screener are OK.

dimeadozen.org - obscure music stuff
underground-gamer.com - video games
thepiratebay.org - everything else

I still use soulseek for music. That program will never die. I hope.

One of the best places for legal torrents is bt.etree.org.
Lots of free live music there. Like archive.org, with a wider selection. I highly recommend everyone check out the Pedal Steel Convention from 1976. There's some amazing music in there, once you get past Rhinestone Cowboy.
bt.etree.org is ratio free, but you are encouraged to seed for as long as possible of course. This is a good way to get used to using torrents before you get involved with a private tracker.

I am not sure why you guys are upset about the ads,
you go in there , type what you want, and it shows up, and you download it for free
can't you handle a few ads to keep the sites running?

I want to ask a question,
how come websites like miniNova have been shut down by the feds while others are still running strong? They are all the same, shouldn't they take them all down if one falls?
The other thing is who is risking his life to get into prison by uploading/downloading and seed those illegal torrents? How come they aren't getting caught?

Am not in the USA but if I was, I will be damn scared to do it.

As for sites, I guess everyone is using the piratebay as his favorite

prolly has something to do with the copyright laws and where they are located.

i use demonoid and iptorrents. i try to stay with the private trackers cause i already got a letter from comcast about copyright infringement 5 years ago about a stupid dreamcast game.

Suprnova (until it got shut down)
Mininova (until it recently went legal)
ThePirateBay
FunFile (private)
Black Cats Games (until it got shut down)
Pretome (private)
btjunkie
Demonoid (private)

My favorite is Demonoid and I'm glad it's back. It's pretty much my favorite website.
