I just got Gaiares

Post by Anayo »

I just got Gaiares yesterday and booted it up today. It's really slick. The graphics and music are kind of on the modest side, but they do a good job giving the game an interesting atmosphere (and they take me back to '91, so it gets nostalgia points). What I like the most is how you can "vampirize" enemy ships and take their guns away from them. I've never seen that in an R-Type inspired shooter before.

It might be my fave hori-shmup! Awesome game, well worth persevering through to the end.

Bought a copy of this a little a month ago from a flea market without really checking it out. Turns out that the cart manual and inside facing part of the cover insert were covered with black, green and white mold.

Suffice to say, I haven't touched it since.

Bah wuss! :P

I carefully washed about 20 DVDs, covers, and paper inserts that had gotten wet and moldy and managed to save them and have them not look too bad. Of course this meant saving from the trash and getting them for free.

Anyway, yes its a fun game. Some people think its overrated, but oh well. The ads with that 'professional gamer' with the mullet for the game were sure amusing though.

Once something's molding it can't be saved period.

You can feel triumphant now, but when all of your other DVD's on the same shelf start molding/re-molding then don't look at me.

Of course the cart works just fine and the plastic is impossible to mold given the fact that well......it's plastic so the only problem is trying to get the label off of it, sterilizing the plastic case, tossing the manual and finding a replacement AND not succumbing to some form of mold illness/poisoning/disease along the way.

Eh, depends on how bad things got and how you clean. I was using really hot water with the soap. I actually ruined a few DVDs because I ran them under the hot water and the temperature difference from one side to the other made the disc flex and I separated the layers on a few accidentally. Granted I did pick the ones that weren't as bad, but this was 5 years ago and I've had no regrowth or issues. Of course tthe artwork is under plastic, so even if there were something I had missed it wouldn't be against another. I suppose I could have just kept the discs since those were easy to clean. It was a challenge to clean paper inserts without destroying them.

Well mold spores spread pretty insanely. For example every time you open that case and the clear plastic sleeve which separates the insert from the outside opens up wide the influx of air will actually push millions of mold spores into the air which can cause molding in a multitude of other bio-degradable items such as books, magazines, posters, game boxes, etc...

I picked up a lot of info about mold and handling/safe disposal from when I had to deal with it after a pipe burst at our old house after we moved (Luckily) and we had to make sure it was all out of the house and clean for our new tenants to browse/move in as we had put our old house up for rent. Trust me though when I say a little mold can become a massive problem over time if it's not taken care of.

This and Gynoug (aka Wings of Wor) are my two favourite hori shooters on Megadrive/Genesis. Brilliant games.

Gaiares does bring me back. I would've loved a sequel - Gaiares II: Gulfer's Ambition maybe?
