Hello,
I just want to see what are your thoughts on the following idea.
You know how the western world is like free speech and against internet censoring, and Iran government should go to hell because the censor some websites. Well...
Lately I have been being bothered by this, more and more websites are telling me that I am not aloud to view the site or video because this is only available in the United States. Like a lot of websites are, one of the funny things I passed by was justin.tv when it tells me that I got to a maximum limit of streams to my country, what does that mean? And its free service.
Any body thinks this is a form of internet censoring because I sure do, its not like telling you should pay for it. They are telling me this is free for everyone in the United States, but against you we segregate. There is not even an option to pay for it.
How come its free in the united states and I am not aloud to view /use it? Its free!
I do not understand why would they do this, if it is free then why can't I view?
It will only get them more publicity or viewers.
If it is paid for then you increase your customer base , do you want to sell for 300 million Americans or 6 billion humans?
As far as I know companies spend billions of dollars to get their name out there and to be known, this is the first time I see companies saying "Stop, we do not want you to know us or use our services. Please leave"
Any can explain this?
Any one think this is internet censoring, because I think it is in some way or another.
Internet Censoring
Re: Internet Censoring
I don't think censorship is the proper word to use with regards to things like that. The biggest example I can think of is Hulu. Hulu videos cannot be viewed outside of the US. This is not the same as the traditional censorship, such as in China. This is more of a rights management. Hulu only has the rights to broadcast the TV shows to the US. It's just like how DVD regions work, only more finely granulated.

Re: Internet Censoring
It has to do with what your government deems suitable for your countries people to view.
For example: China banned access to YouTube because a video surfaced of a chinese police officer beating a civilian earlier this year. (Im not sure whether or not they have since allowed access to the site or not).
Different countries have material that they deem inappropriate, and will either all out block the content or, in your case, only allow a certain amount of the content to be viewed.
Also it could be as simple as the content publisher hasnt secured the rights to publish in other territories other than the US.
I do agree that the internet shouldnt be region locked but unfortunately it is.

There's always ways around it though, use a US proxy.

Sorry, I never got the idea of how a proxy works since 1998
Re: Internet Censoring
No, it isn't. But using proxy is slow anyway.

Bahrain
but its not my country, its everyone outside the USA...
I think I am not aloud to buy off iTunes and have to lie on xbox live and state that I am in America(in the settings) just to play online.
I logged on torrent website, I got War Games and The Cable Guy , quikc-easy-free.
You see one thing that keeps pirating going on is not pricing, but its much easier too. I know of no place that will allow me to do it in such a way.
When you go legit, its extra crazy shipping prices, a lot of setting accounts, you MUST have credit card(i don't work), then you get all these crazy rules that it can be on your iPod not burned on DVD, it expires in 2 days , and so.
If you are wondering why I am talking about pirating while this is about internet censoring, this is because internet censoring leads to pirating.
I can't log on Hulu or others to watch some episodes(which are free for American viewers) I log on torrent and download, how nice.
TNA ppv is not available to watch where I am, dvd in a month, $15 for shipping, WHY so?
Next day download it off torrent!
I want to say something funny,
Around here there is something that is called dreambox:
http://www.dream-multimedia-tv.de/dm-500
This thing you connect to the internet and you get every channel on any satellite that touches our region including PPVs.
I think how it works is one person gets a legit subscription to cable channels, then use it to send signals(piracy) to many people.
1 guy pays $1000 for 1 year cable channels, he resells it for 20 people for $100 each.
100x20= $2000, $1000 of pure profit.
You can do this in local shops here, although there are supposed to be copyright laws. So here is the deal.
Legit way:
Sell your kidney and pay something like $1000 per year for cable channels which if you watch them for 1 week , I guarantee you it will be a rerun for the next 3 months of same content. No NEW series, the latest and most exclusive is last years. So if it is Lost season 5, they are running Lost season 4 which is EXCLUSIVE, remember. Its a pain in the ass to order PPVs because you have to call them or order online(can't do it with no credit card), then they turn it on for 24 hours and it will be off, in the day you ordered it not when you choose to view it.
Pirating way:
Go to a local shop, pay $100-130 , get all channels including all PPVs for a whole year. Thats it.
Whats funny?
Is that the legit way loses signal specially on live events and have card problems, while the piracy way is going on solid! How about that!
Its not a lower price, but a better service!

Re: Internet Censoring
Internet Censorship has always been an issue I was passionate about. I believe that the internet is a free information source that everyone should have a right to use all of. There's even been a bit of external blocking going on lately: [Warning, link NSFW] http://www.sankakucomplex.com/2009/10/2 ... our-games/
