Why is anime synonymous with gaming?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

I'd like to point out a case where the Anime came out better than the game it was based on (which has never happened when American companies tried it). Gungrave. That is all.

Well, that came completely out of left field. Not that I'm offended or anything by that particular brand of hentai(although I personally can't stand it), just that I don't even know what was the trigger for such a statement to be made.

It's no big deal. I was just thinking about the stuff I like from Japan.

I don't think they are synonymous, it's just they have a large number of fans that overlap.

I think its the originality, fantasy, ability to create something unreal that connects the two.
The creator has the ability to think 'out of the box' and exagerate everything. And unlike western catroons, anime do not target children, but teens and grownups also.
That's not good because they can add violence and sex but they have more complex storylines and character development. I think anime in eastern culture, is closer to movies (and games) in the western culture than cartoons.

I agree. Personally I too seek originailty in anime and I've gotten really picky over the years.

I think certain types of people just love Japanese stuff. These people's first exposure to Japanese culture was through video games when they were children. When they got older and discovered Japanese animation they found it interesting.

I love JRPGs and the UC Gundam shows but I can't watch anime anymore. I really believe it is strictly a commercial product. There probably is original and independent animation from Japan that would blow me away but from what I have seen on the mainstream and not so mainstream it is boring and actually offends me a little.

Anything mainstream, or trying to be mainstream, is going to be overcommercialized crap. You want the good shit, do a search for 'Satoshi Kon'.

Anime here in the states seems mostly the realm of kids and teenagers these days. It's all silly stuff like card battle this, DBZ rip off that. That's why I don't bother with anime anymore. It's just hard to find any mature stuff without some effort. Plus, buying anime is way too expensive. I still have a lot of stuff from my anime days though. Cowboy Bebop, Record of Lodoss War, Slayers, some Miyazaki stuff, Rurouni Kenshin. I think I have most of the well known, classic stuff in anime. I just don't care for the stuff that is popular now and days. I am so sick of hearing about Naruto and all those card battle shows.

As far as video games go, Japanese game development is REALLY falling behind. Some prominent developers have even admitted this, like Keiji Inafune. I think Japan is too traditional and there's littled appreciated for innovation or risks in video games. Just look at how samey all their rpgs are. I find it interesting that Japan is falling behind Western based game companies, considering that gaming started in the West and then Japan basically took it from us and then became the center for all things gaming. Now we come full circle

Speak for yourself.

On a more serious note, I'd bet that anime/manga (however you want to divide them) has had better games based on it than any other medium, followed by comics, cartoons, movies, and then TV shows.

Air Gear = Jet Set Radio the Anime

If you even remotely liked Jet Set/Grind Radio and Jet Set Radio Future and their soundtracks then you owe it to yourselves to watch this as is the closest we'll ever get to seeing a Jet Set Radio Anime.

it was good but if you ever try going beyond the anime into the manga, it starts to get ridiculous (kind of tolerable). people start dieing left and right and the plot starts to lose it's self.

tell me about it... and that's why i don't watch anime on channels and look for subbed anime on the internet. once in a while i find a mature anime but most of the time it's the classics like tenchi muyo, Great teacher onizuka, or trigun that grab my attention.
