Where all the Blu-Ray anime at?
Re: Where all the Blu-Ray anime at?
Granted there isn't much in the way of anime (including english subs/dub) on blu-ray yet, but i've managed to collect a few;
Afro Samurai
Akira
Freedom
Ghost in the Shell
Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence
Paprika
Patlabor
Patlabor 2
Ponyo
Royal Space Force: Wings of Honeamise
Sword of the Stranger
Tekkonkinkreet
Films and series like Ponyo, Tekkonkinkreet, Paprika, Freedom & Afro Samurai all look stunning and vibrant in HD, whereas films like Ghost in the Shell, Innoncence and Patlabor don't benefit quite as much from the HD treatment. On the otherhand, the transfer of Akira & Wings of Honeamise is excellent and really gives new life to these classic films.
So really, any anime should look great on blu-ray if the producers take the time to give it the treatment it deserves - speaking of which, beware the Funimation blu-ray release of Samurai Champloo, it's basically just upscalled and they've used a filter that actually removes some of the detail!

Understandable. I have a good suggestion for you then. Download HD anime off the internet one day after it airs in Japan, enjoy it, and then 6 months later when the inferior DVD comes out, buy it and store it on your shelf, never to be watched. This method would support the anime companies without a quality/convenience/time sacrifice on your part.the7k wrote:I always love this response: Piracy is the answer. And we all wonder why anime studios and distributors are shutting down.Inazuma wrote:I've been watching tons of HD anime for a good four years now. It's called the internet. Blu Ray would be taking a step backwards imo. But if you must insist on watching Blu Ray anime, I suggest downloading the rips from Japan. I see Blu Ray rips coming out all the time. Recently Dragon Ball Kai started to come out on Blu Ray and it's better than the TV version since it doesn't crop the screen to pull off a fake widescreen.
I own a PS3 but never felt the need to buy a Blu Ray since the PS3 can stream media from my computer network or run files off of burned DVD's. The PS3 makes Blu Ray obsolete. Very ironic indeed.
Piracy is never the answer. You love something, you support it. You don't throw it to the wolves, or worse, become one of those wolves.
By the way, I have legally purchased about 450 anime dvds new, not used, so I think I've done my part in supporting the anime companies.

I can picture it now.Inazuma wrote:By the way, I have legally purchased about 450 anime dvds new, not used, so I think I've done my part in supporting the anime companies.

*store security alarm goes off*
Store Security: Excuse me sir, but you didn't pay for that video game.
Inazuma: I legally purchased about 50 games from this store new, not used, so I think I've done my part in supporting the game companies.

There's a lot of morally grey territory with downloading as opposed to purchasing content, but it annoys the hell out of me when people try to justify it with bullshit excuses.

That's a nice collection. So, does England see a good showing of Blu-Ray anime? I still haven't seen Ponyo hit Blu-Ray in the states.Bootaaay wrote:Granted there isn't much in the way of anime (including english subs/dub) on blu-ray yet, but i've managed to collect a few;

I'm still waiting on The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. Never got to see it, but I'm hoping it'll be one of those worth waiting for to see on Blu-Ray.

Not particularly, we get less anime than the US does, although some of the Funimation titles like Shigurui & Samurai Champloo are published under the Manga imprint in the UK. As for Ponyo, I imported the Asian version as it has English subs and is region free - couldn't wait for the US/EU release as I wanted to see Ghibli in HD asap :pthe7k wrote:That's a nice collection. I got one for Akira. I got to say it is the best Blu-Ray movie I have. It looks amazing.

Re: Where all the Blu-Ray anime at?
Umineko no Naku Koro Ni has released a lot of Blu-ray content, and I have a Blu-ray of 5 Centimeters Per Second, which deserves the treatment way more than anything of Deen's.
But yeah, Gainax needs to re-release their classics on Blu-ray. Kyoani I care less about because of the crap they pulled this season with Haruhi.
EDIT: just came at the thought of Tekkonkinkreet in blu-ray. Jealous.

Can't find the other image I had to convey my hatred. But no.
EDIT: Here we go
