New "retro" style games

Post by jfe2 »

I've been playing a lot of XBLA recently, and have been really getting into the newer "retro" style games. There are so many great revivals of great games from the past, and there are even a few games that are new IPs that do a great job at capturing that retro feel. Here's some of what I've been playing

Pacman C.E. - SO addicting! I never thought they could make Pacman interesting again.

R-Type: Dimensions - This is just an awesome game. It's R-Type I and II in a bundle and you can play with either updated 3D graphics or the old school 2D stuff. Both games are really hard, but luckily they have an infinite lives mode for people like me, who blow through the stock three lives by the beginning of the second level.

Galaga: Legions - This game throws TONS of enemies at you, and it gets really intense! It's a fun, challenging take on Galaga and I've really been enjoying it.

Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved² - How have I never played this until now?! It's not really a retro remake, but it has a real retro feel to it. There are six very addicting modes that can be played. Achievement hunting is a blast in this game.

Space Invaders Extreme - Space Invaders was one of the first games I played on the Intellivision when I was a kid, and this game does the franchise justice in my eyes. Another very addicting shooter. It's one of those games where you actually want to top your previous best scores.

Bubble Bobble Neo - I've always been a big Bubble Bobble fan, but for some reason I really suck at it nowadays. When I was a kid, I could get like 70 levels in, but now I make it to maybe level 15 before I'm a goner. The updated graphics are nice, but I wish there was an option to revert to the old school style like in R-Type: Dimensions.

Anyone else totally loving these games? Anyone playing anything similar?

I've been enjoying Canabalt on my iPhone. Much improved over the PC flash game.

I just got into Prinny: Can I Really Be the Hero?
It's tough, and the jumping mechanics take a little getting used to, but I'm a sucker for a good old school platformer

Didn't Alien Breed just come out? I've never played the amiga version but I thought this new one looked cool. You should take a look.

I played the demo today and it seemed pretty fun! Kind of like a twin stick shooter meets a survival horror type game. It definitely feels like co-op would be awesome in that game.

Such a sadistic game, especially the last boss.

I just beat the Darth Vader-esque boss...I'm hoping I'm not going to have a # of lives problem somewhere down the line.

So I downloaded Alien Breed Evolution today and I am REALLY enjoying it! Great atmosphere and it uses the Unreal Engine 3. It is like a top-down view, twin-stick, survival-horror shooter. I really want to try the co-op, so if anyone else gets it let me know!
