That's a shame :(

Hopefully, the "other media" will keep this thread alive.

Most recently I read The Old Man and the Sea, by Ernest Hemingway. It only took a few hours, and it was an assignment, but I still enjoyed it.

And the last manga I read was the one-shot Cowa! by Akira Toriyama. It was ok, but not on par with what I'd expect from him.

I'd go for Battle Angel Alita- a great series. The Battle Royal novel, to me, seems to get old after a while though it's still enjoyable...and I loved the movie.

And Watchmen...(or did you mean Watchman, by Robert Crais?)

There were at least two other threads for books already, but I guess those died out months ago (maybe a year?)
Of course Battle Royale movie is awesome, why wouldnt it be.

Watchman, the comic.

Ive also got Gunsmith Cats Burst vol 3 to read (ive had it for a year and a half, havent read a word from it).

From what i read in Alita, it was pretty good. I got it because James Cameron is doing a movie off the manga, which peaked my interest...

i think a friend of mine told me about drifting life. he at least showed me some of tatsumi's manga and even my two japanese friends with us had never heard of him but were in awe of his style. i'd definitely like to check out his stuff, but i haven't seen it available to where i can get it. and i like groucho marx too, so i might have to check out that book Luke was reading 8)

i recently finished slaughterhouse five and really enjoyed it. i'd like to read sirens of titans next, since it apparently inspired shigesato itoi with his story for earthbound. i also read after dark by haruki murakami. it was ridiculously short in terms of his other books, but i really enjoyed it. it's especially easy to follow since the entire story takes place in a single night. i'm also trying to read voltaire's candide, but i really hate the way the story is phrased. 1700's europe booooores me!

Why is this thread not active?!

I just picked up the Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy from Amazon. I can't wait for it to get here! I thought the movie was decent, but I hear that the book is excellent, so I figured it was about time I gave it a shot.

I'm also thinking of getting Ender's Game, regardless of the fact that I think Orson Scott Card is a douchebag.

Heinrich Heine

Die Lorelei

Ich weiß nicht, was soll es bedeuten,
Daß ich so traurig bin;
Ein Märchen aus alten Zeiten,
Das kommt mir nicht aus dem Sinn.

Die Luft ist kühl, und es dunkelt,
Un ruhig fließt der Rhein;
Der Gipfel des Berges funkelt
In Abendsonnenschein.

Die schönste Jungfrau sitzet
Dort oben wunderbar,
Ihr goldenes Geschmeide blitzet,
Sie kämmt ihr goldenes Haar.

Sie kämmt es mit goldenem Kamme
Und singt ein Leid dabei;
Das hat eine wundersame,
Gewaltige Melodei.

Den Schiffer im kleinen Schiffe
Ergreift es mit wildem Weh;
Er schaut nicht die Felsenriffe,
Er schaut nur hinauf in die Höh'.

Ich glaube, die Wellen verschlingen
Am Ende Schiffer uns Kahn;
Und das hat mit ihrem Singen
Die Lorelei getan.

I don't know what it may signify
That I am so sad;
There's a tale from ancient times
That I can't get out of my mind.

The air is cool and the twilight is falling
and the Rhine is flowing quietly by;
the top of the mountain is glittering
in the evening sun.

The loveliest maiden is sitting
Up there, wondrous to tell.
Her golden jewelry sparkles
as she combs her golden hair

She combs it with a golden comb
and sings a song as she does,
A song with a peculiar,
powerful melody.

It seizes upon the boatman in his small boat
With unrestrained woe;
He does not look below to the rocky shoals,
He only looks up at the heights.

If I'm not mistaken, the waters
Finally swallowed up fisher and boat;
And with her singing
The Lorelei did this.

Edgar Allan Poe

Annabel Lee

It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of ANNABEL LEE;
And this maiden she lived with no other thought
Than to love and be loved by me.

I was a child and she was a child,
In this kingdom by the sea;
But we loved with a love that was more than love-
I and my Annabel Lee;
With a love that the winged seraphs of heaven
Coveted her and me.

And this was the reason that, long ago,
In this kingdom by the sea,
A wind blew out of a cloud, chilling
My beautiful Annabel Lee;
So that her highborn kinsman came
And bore her away from me,
To shut her up in a sepulchre
In this kingdom by the sea.

The angels, not half so happy in heaven,
Went envying her and me-
Yes!- that was the reason (as all men know,
In this kingdom by the sea)
That the wind came out of the cloud by night,
Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee.

But our love it was stronger by far than the love
Of those who were older than we-
Of many far wiser than we-
And neither the angels in heaven above,
Nor the demons down under the sea,
Can ever dissever my soul from the soul
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee.

For the moon never beams without bringing me dreams
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And the stars never rise but I feel the bright eyes
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side
Of my darling- my darling- my life and my bride,
In the sepulchre there by the sea,
In her tomb by the sounding sea.

James Joyce

Nightpiece

Gaunt in gloom,
The pale stars their torches,
Enshrouded, wave.
Ghostfires from heaven's far verges faint illume,
Arches on soaring arches,
Night's sindark nave.

Seraphim,
The lost hosts awaken
To service till
In moonless gloom each lapses muted, dim,
Raised when she has and shaken
Her thurible.

And long and loud,
To night's nave upsoaring,
A starknell tolls
As the bleak incense surges, cloud on cloud,
Voidward from the adoring
Waste of souls.

And even though I am athiest...

Psalms 91

1 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High
shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

2 I will say of the LORD,
He is my refuge and my fortress:
my God; in him will I trust.

3 Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler,
and from the noisome pestilence.

4 He shall cover thee with his feathers,
and under his wings shalt thou trust:
his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.

5 Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night;
nor for the arrow that flieth by day;

6 nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness;
nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.

7 A thousand shall fall at thy side,
and ten thousand at thy right hand;
but it shall not come nigh thee.

8 Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold
and see the reward of the wicked.

9 Because thou hast made the LORD, which is my refuge,
even the Most High, thy habitation;

10 there shall no evil befall thee,
neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.

11 For he shall give his angels charge over thee,
to keep thee in all thy ways.

12 They shall bear thee up in their hands,
lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.

13 Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder:
the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet.

14 Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him:
I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.

15 He shall call upon me, and I will answer him:
I will be with him in trouble;
I will deliver him, and honor him.

16 With long life will I satisfy him,
and show him my salvation.

I read the Watchman book a few months ago. I thought it was pretty good. I didn't read it because of the movie, by the way, I've actually never seen it.
