Yeah sounds like that sapped the fun out of it to me. I remember renting sonic 1 a number of times, thinking it was hard, and cheating. Years later I regretted that I had never really gotten the feeling of seeing and completing everything for the first time on my own.

Who cares what the idea was? Do you want to play it again? If it takes 1.5 hours to beat than it is what it is. Was the 1.5 hours just the level 1 - level 18 playthrough or does that include the time you spent reading how to beat it and looking at all the levels?

Congratulations, platformers are a favorite genre of mine and Sonic is a great place to start. Wait until you play Sonic & Knuckles, my favorite installment. And you have no idea what it REALLY means to be rewarded for collecting all of the emeralds until you play through S&K with Sonic. I won't spoil it though

Actually, Sonic 3 & Knuckles is the full experience, and, it is truthfully the most epic 2D platformer ever.

Why everyone is telling me that I cheated my way through it?
I beat that game fair and square! From start to end, no cheats except secrets and hidden areas within the game!

Plus to not kill excitement, I never skipped levels, I played each one by its own until I am done with it I played the next one. Think of it as if Sonic had unlimited continues.

I did a lot on my own, specially figuring out how to beat the boss on Spring Yard , which was frustrating.
As a matter of fact, the only thing I got from tutorials is video on youtube on how to beat the final boss and the number of levels in the game i. Thats about it!

Sonic 2 seems just as exciting.

Get Sonic Jam for Saturn if you have one, you can save and put in cheats. I really dont think I could sit through an entire Sonic game in one go these days. I can play RPGs for more than an 2 hours but not platformers. They are fun but after a while I cant keep going on.

Hey, you brought something to my attention.
I think this is also the first time I complete a game in one sitting!

I didn't finish Ghostbusters for Genesis until I used Game Genie. I really didn't cheat too badly, just had it on unlimited life. It was an awesome game once I didn't have to worry about starting all over again after dying in the final stage.

That was my major problem with games back in the day, the continues. Hell, if in the arcade I theoretically have unlimited lives via a pile of quarters then why couldn't home console games do the same? I spent $50+ on the home version, which would equal 200 quarters, so give me 200 continues.

Nowaways, dying and starting at the very beginning is unheard of. lol

Wait. So you didn't actually play through the game in one go-- you played each level individually until you could pass it, level-skipping past each level as you beat it on subsequent plays?

If so, then I wouldn't consider you to have beaten the game.

No no,
lets say I play all the way to Spring Yard, then die there.
I don't start all over just to figure my way out of Spring yard, I chose Spring yard and I star tot play again.
Once I went through all the levels, getting to the final boss and losing my last life, I started from the beginning and played through the whole thing.

No more surprises or enemies I can't figure how to pass.
Once I got to the final Boss where I didn't want to fail my dream of completing a platformer, I went online and watched a strategy on how to beat him, and tried it out , it worked. The Final Boss was probably the easiest, once you know you have to stand ont he right ;)

I completed the game start-to-finish in one sitting, with all the lives I got from the game, I just had a tour at all the levels before that.
