With the flood of crappy 3rd Party controllers for SNES and Genesis, finding controllers on places like eBay is becoming a hassle. I was curious though, if this controller was an official SNES controller.

I saw this same controller at PnT today, and while the box and and controller had Nintendo info, somehow it didnt sit right with me. The box for this controller looked like a bad photocopy in areas. I originally thought that these were official controllers that came out at the end of the SNES's lifespan at the late 90s and they had a bunch leftover new ones. But...the box still had this feeling of bootleg. I was really tempted to get it though and when I took the controller out of the box it felt ok. Maybe because it was new but the buttons were not as loose as mine (maybe because it's not broken in yet)
Even if they are fake, they felt pretty decent as compared to the Yobo FC3 controllers which are complete and utter garbage.

Re: Real SNES Controllers
This is the fake. I have one and was equally disappointed when I realized it wasn't the real deal - I should have known better. The box is totally misleading, which is all I had to go on at the time. The best way to tell is that, in the picture of the controller out of the box, there is a little extra rubber around the base of the cord where it comes out of the controller. If you look at the box picture, which is of the official controller, this extra rubber is missing and the cord just goes directly in the controller.
As for the controller itself, it is eh. I have heard that it is hit or miss (a benefit of buying it at a local store as you can return it easier). All the buttons work on mine, but the buttons are all a little mushy if that makes sense. They just don't feel as responsive as the real controller. I feel sometimes that I have to push down REALLY hard to get a response. Also, they misfire sometimes. I had a great deal of trouble playing Mario with it because I would go to run for a long jump and for some reason he would squat right before jumping making this impossible. Those who are good at tweaking might have more luck - I feel as though I tried to place the buttons from my original in the body of this new one since I was combining two slightly broken controllers into one working one thinking it'd be nice in a non-cracked, non-scuffed casing, but it was slightly a different size... I can't remember.

Nope same copies at Play N Trade stocks and you see everywhere. Hard to tell in their small picture, but the logo in the middle top shold not be the Nintendo written with the rounded line around it. It should say Super Nintendo in skinny gray italicised letters and entertainment system in reverse in a stripe belos. The ABXY buttons are labeles in light gray, not black.

Re: Real SNES Controllers
Good catch, I hadn't looked at the knockoffs close enough to realize they had an external stress relief like most controllers instead of the rounded indention like real SNES ones.vash23n wrote:The best way to tell is that, in the picture of the controller out of the box, there is a little extra rubber around the base of the cord where it comes out of the controller. Man even more ways the photo on the box the remake comes in misleads the buyer, good call Hobie.Hobie-wan wrote:Nope same copies at Play N Trade stocks and you see everywhere. Re: Real SNES Controllers
I'm surprised you guys didn't mention the crappy sticker around the buttons. Does the controller actually have concave X and Y buttons? All of the crappy repros I've come across have had convex ones.

Re: Real SNES Controllers
Yeah I have bought many of those controls the op posted. The funny thing is that if you take em apart the number 2007 is there

I have experienced mixed things with these controllers. They seem to implement a design that is superior to the original snes controllers that hobie posted. BUT the trade off is that they are not as well made. GO FUCKING FIGURE. I have gone through about 4 controllers over the last 8 months ever since I got contra 3. The D-pad always dies on me. The "new" controllers D-pad's rubber stoppers(no clue what they are actually called) are directly on the controllers face while the original design relies on a flimsy circular rubber stopper that wears easily. Despite this go with the original snes controllers. There is no proper substitute. I had two original ones for the longest time but I lost em and I have been regretting it ever since.

Re: Real SNES Controllers
I thats like the one I have, but I thought later revisions around the time of SNES 2 had the Nintendo logo etched in like on the box.Hobie-wan wrote:Nope same copies at Play N Trade stocks and you see everywhere. Well now I'm glad I didn't get that controller than. I knew it was too good to be true. Maybe Videogames ETC has some. I'll have to look next time I'm there.

You've got to be careful with SNES controllers as there are a ton of really close looking knockoffs. That being said, you're right, SNES 2 was released with the traditional circled Nintendo logo pressed into the plastic, with the 'L' and 'R' on their respective buttons raised up, as apposed to being painted on, like they are on the original.
The easiest way to tell (besides the base of the cord as someone already mentioned) is the lettering for the BAXY buttons, which when made by Nintendo are white letters on a light gray background. While, many knockoffs use black for the letters and a darker gray background.
Re: Real SNES Controllers
oh yes, please dont fall for that misleading box crap, i had bought two "Boxed" snes controllers only to open them and find some cheap ass knock offs, the ones with the rounded nintendo logo
