MMC speeds (N-Gage related)

Post by Ivo »

Hi all,

I have a N-Gage QD (ok let's wait a bit until you stop mocking me).

...

I use a 1GB MMC card for it. I get somewhat frequent slowdowns so I decided to look into the MMC speed - it is 3 MB/sec (not sure if same for writing, I suppose that the specs would show the highest speed which should be for reading). I looked and found some MMCs with 8 MB/sec read and 7 MB/sec write. That might do the trick, but before I buy another MMC I'd like to know:

1. What read speed do the commercial N-gage games use in their MMCs

2. What's the maximum MMC speed around for a read/write MMC

3. If you happen to have a Nokia phone that uses MMCs* (or even - who knows - an N-gage of your own) recommend me a speed so that this doesn't happen so much, or hopefully at all... I'm wondering if I should just buy the fastest MMC, but perhaps the N-gage own hardware won't keep up with the faster cards of this age (the N-gage isn't exactly novel hardware, afterall).

All speeds above are in MB, not Mb - important difference of course.

* I reckon even if it uses SD the transfer speed should translate well into MMC.

Regards,
Ivo.

So far I only was able to find out that:

a) at least 52 MB/s exist (with, allegedly, 13 "contacts"); they are called HS-MMC I believe (HS for High Speed).

b) that is very (VERY) likely more than the N-gage itself can handle, as it seems to only have 7 contacts on the MMC card slot.

I'd still like to know for sure

1. the maximum transfer speed of the N-Gage QD (the technical specs of the official page don't have it)
2. the transfer speed of commercial games MMCs (the number of contacts should be a decent indication, but hopefully an actual figure?)

Hopefully Ill get a chance to look at my copy of Shadowkey when I get home tonight. I have always been told it is one of the biggest games so maybe it can be an indicator.
