Did PC Engine games come with the outer box?

Post by crux »

I've been browsing some titles that weren't released stateside for the good ol' PC Engine and I haven't seen a single one that has an outer box. However, finding Turbo Grafx games with the outer cardboard box is already like pulling teeth, so perhaps it's just coincidence. Almost every Turbo game I own has the outer case, so I'd like to remain consistent. Any idea?

As far as I know the PC-engine games didn't come in a box most cases are white also. The insides aren't the same either none of the pce hucard games I own have the clip to hold the game in place like the us ones do.

I came across a supposed sealed game for PC Engine and it didn't have an outer box, so I'd garner that you're right. Good to know. Hunting for those outer boxes is evil.

Yup, I'm not aware of boxes for any PCE games either and card games have no clip. Instead some or all were shipped with a little piece of thin yellow foam that's slightly smaller than the card to keep them still in shipping. I have about 50/50 with my complete PCE games. Hopefully that's not going to drive you bonkers trying to be super complete.

They DO NOT have outer boxes. They come with the game, slip cover for the game (HuCard), foam to hold the game in place, jewel case (two variants), manual, sometimes inserts, spine card, and are sealed. That's it. Also, it's false to say that most cases are white. SOME cases are white. Most older ones are black, and a lot of newer ones are white. Most CD games have white cases, but that is not a rule.

Super Grafx games DO have outer boxes.

Thanks for the clarification, Breetai. Good point about SuperGrafx - I have Madouou Granzort sitting three feet away from me and Aldynes in the same room, both with the outer sleeve.

So the white cases aren't over or under 50%?

The early TG-16 games didn't have the clip either. They started doing that later on.

Also, the SuperGrafx outer boxes are smaller than the TG-16 outer boxes. The SG boxes fit snug around the CD case, instead of having all the room that the TG-16 boxes have.

What? That didn't make a lot of sense.

I'd say the white cases are DEFINITELY way less than 50% of the HuCard games. The side labels are usually white, but the cases aren't (although most of the double-size cases ARE white).

Another question (for the TurboGrafx specifically this time) - I know Gate of Thunder was part of a three-in-one pack-in game for the TurboDuo, so does that mean it wouldn't have the outer box?

And for that matter, any stranglers for TurboGrafx games that wouldn't have the outer box? I'd hate to be holding out for something that doesn't exist.
