This is something that has really been annoying me a lot lately. It seems to be more of a problem with sites dealing with retro games, but it is even something of a problem with some modern game sites too I believe. There is a serious lack on info on regional differences in video games. Most people don't know of the numerous changes done to the old Castlevania games, or the edits in Streets of Rage 2, or the removal of the Ninja women in Ninja Warriors on the S-NES, or the improvements in the japanese version of the original Sonic game, etc, etc.
I wish there was a site dedicated to this kind of thing. Wikipedia is good sometimes, but not always. Some game entries are incomplete or occasionally inaccurate. I'm a bit of a purist and I want to know about these things since some of my systems are set up for import gaming and it is something I have developed an interest in. However, I don't want to import something unless it is necessary due to the language barrier. It's not a big deal with most action-oriented games, platformers, shooters, etc but I still would rather not play something in Japanese unless I know it is the only way to play the game in its purest form. There is a great site deciated to doing this for movies on DVD, you just google dvdcompare and it pops up. There should be a site like this for video games too, cataloguing regional differences in all games new and old, and maybe even comparing english dubs to the original japanese.
For collectors out there, wouldn't you like to know that you are getting a game in its best form? Gamers should know that they can pick up a game like Final Fight 3 and know that they are getting the same game as the super famicom version, but to stay away from getting the american version of something like Ninja Warriors on the S-NES if they want to play it uncut. There's little info on stuff like that for many older games. I went through quite a few retro review sites that reviewed this particular game and didn't mention ANY of the regional differences. I only learned of the censorship in this game because I found a random youtube video of someone playing the japanese version of the game. To my surprise I learned that my US copy of the game was missing blood, female ninja enemies, and there were supposedly even changes in the game's intro and ending. That's stuff people should know about when they are researching a game they have an interest in, especially given the large number of import savvy gamers out there.
What don't more gaming sites cover regional differences?
