I posted a long section of thoughts in the "Currently Playing" thread in the RPG section on Record of Lodoss War for the Sega Dreamcast, but I figured I'd post another thread for general discussion, as I don't know how many folks here have played it.
So I've maxed out my experience, I've gotten the 30 medallions, found all the Gothic Dragon armor, I've got most of the weapons and armors in the game in my display case, and I'm running around in the Cold Caves. I could probably go and beat the final boss pretty soon, as my character's a beast.
But there are enemies in this game that seem to think otherwise. I just found myself hemmed into a corner on Cold Caves level 6, where a Mithril Golem decided he should knock me off my high horse by one-shotting me. He just walked up and said "Nope" as he bitch slapped me for 5830 points of damage(my max health is currently around 4300 or so). So I spent some of the mithril I'd been holding onto to upgrade my stuff, upped my armor a bit as well as my prevention stat(supposed to negate a percentage of damage), and figured I'd give it a shot. He hit me for 5603. It's an improvement, but I'm still getting killed. I suppose it's back through the Cold Caves from the start again.
There are some absolutely nasty critters in this game. I haven't faced the two uber bosses yet(spoilers: dragons), but I'm looking forward to it. As I said above, I've done all the prerequisites, but I figure I should upgrade my items a bit more and make sure I've got everything I need to do it.
The translation errors in this game are both endearing and annoying to me. Endearing because calling Medusa a lowly bog imp is hilarious to me, annoying because it's messed me up when using teleporters, and some of the poor spelling and grammar just look bad.
Anybody else ever play this game? Did you take on the dragons? Did you make it through the Cold Cave? I really want to do it, but all those suckers that petrify you...ugh. It's not fun to get mobbed by five creatures that all petrify you when they attack, and they all take turns continually doing it so that I never break out. I'd say it and the stunlocking beat downs some critters engage in really pisses me off.
Record of Lodoss War
Re: Record of Lodoss War
I haven't even heard of this game before, but I do have fond memories of watching Record of Lodoss War when I was a kid. I totally remember seeing a dwarf fighting a dragon... It's a hazy memory, but the one that sticks out the most.
This game sounds interesting though. Is it real time combat or turn based? I may try it out when I finish up Dragon Age: Origins.

Re: Record of Lodoss War
I LOVE this game. It is one of the most underrated games in my opinion. I never made it as far as you have but I spent a good bit of time maxing out my character and exploring. I never even heard of the anime it was based on but just from a gaming standpoint this is right up my alley. I wish they made more games that gave you the freedom this one does.
I have to say though that some of the things that annoy me are items like metal boots that clank every step you walk and the lagging when you have 500 or so goblins or whatever attacking you at once. This game alone would make it worth overclocking the Dreamcast.

Re: Record of Lodoss War
I've actually never heard of this game before. I will be sure to check it out though.
Re: Record of Lodoss War
The game is essentially Diablo on the Dreamcast. This is a gross oversimplification but it should give you a basic idea of how it plays.

Re: Record of Lodoss War
I bought this game several months ago and still haven't played it other then testing the game.
Where's my chippy? There's my chippy.
Re: Record of Lodoss War
Well, I beat the game, killed both the dragons, and finished Wart's secret quest. So...yeah. I've pretty much done everything short of maxing out all of my character's equipment, which would take quite a while longer, so I figure...meh. My save file has about 45 hours on it.
And the dragons were actually much easier than I expected.

Congrats! Makes you wish the Dreamcast had achievements though, doesn't it?Ack wrote:Well, I beat the game, killed both the dragons, and finished Wart's secret quest. So...yeah. You have inspired me to pick this up sometime early next year.

I'm going to try to beat this game in my free time next week before school starts up again!
Re: Record of Lodoss War
I picked up Record of Lodoss War a few months ago and was not disappointed. The game looks great thru my VGA box, and a nice change of pace from the turn based RPG's I usually play.
I'm only about 6 hours in, and given my track record of finishing RPG's it my be some time before I complete it. I like that the story and system are not so complicated that i'm lost if I l don't play it for awhile, but deep enough to add another dimension to the game besides hacking and slashing.
My only gripe is that the clank clank clank of the Heavy Boots sure are annoying when your playing at 3am and other people are trying to sleep.
