Did I just buy a modded PS2?

Today, I bought a PS2 slim. It plays US-region games perfectly, yet the control scheme on the PS2 browser maps so that "o" is "accept" and "x" is "cancel." The bottom of the PS2 also has a tag that reads NTSC-J.

This leads me to believe that it's a Japanese PS2, but I have no JPN-region games to verify with.

So is this a modded PS2, or is it normal for Japanese PS2's to play US-region games?

It sounds to me like it's a Japanese PS2, rather than a mod. Of course, I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure it's Japanese.

If this is true, put it to the test. Do you have a DVD-R lying around? Copy one of your games to an ISO and burn it to a DVD-R, see if your PS2 will load the game up.


...Unless there's mod chips that will boot regions but not burns, but I'm pretty sure there isn't.

Sounds like you got lucky and whoever sold that too you either forgot or didnt know it was modded.
