I've got a decent amount of credit at a store that has everything from NES to modern day games. I have all the current gen stuff I'd want. I'm itching to begin collecting something old school but am not sure which way to go. I am heavily leaning towards Dreamcast since it's relatively cheap. The games are still great and they specialize in my favorites - fighters and sports. However I'm tempted to try something a bit more obscure like the Neo Geo AES. The NG is insanely priced and it seems like I could get plenty of the games for my PS2 already but the NG is damn sexy. If I were to get a NG, I would be able to get the console and 1 game max. The other alternative is to stock up on quality games for my neglected PS2. It seems to have most of what I'd want on the DC and the NG. There's a ton of awesome compilations on it. I never had a PS2 until about a year ago but never really bought anything for it. I'm not interested in anything like NES, SNES, Genny, etc.
Can anyone steer me in the right direction?
thanks

what to collect?
Re: what to collect?
go for a dreamcast. its well worth it. the games on that system still hold up to todays standards and the games are some of the best titles i have ever played. just look at racketboys topics for the dreamcast and you should be all set.
Re: what to collect?
Your definition of "old school" makes me feel old. Thanks.
If those are your only options, Dreamcast is definitely the way to go. While a lot of great games are cheap, a number of them are expensive as well. Getting into Neo Geo AES on store credit, however, may lead you to the dark side. We're not talking kind of expensive with the AES, we're talking incredibly expensive. MVS is really the way to go unless you're a hardcore collector. And even then the Dreamcast has more variety - Neo Geo mostly specializes in fighters, shooters, and a dash of sports, with misc. games aside.
There are plenty of great PS2 games, of course, but I can't in good conscious recommend a console you already own - especially when Dreamcast is one of the alternatives.
Oh, and:

What no love for the Sega Saturn? I am waiting till Gamestop decides to get rid of all it's PS2 stock. Between Neo Geo and Dreamcast. Go dreamcast.

haha, I feel the same. There's a lot of people on this board that I gather the DC may have been their first system. Which makes me feel old!

Re: what to collect?
Sorry about referring to the Dreamcast as old-school. I'm probably one of the older people here actually. I remember getting Pong and a Colecovision at Caldor. I call anything before current gen old-school which is probably wrong.
I think I may do the Dreamcast and PS2. I can get my SNK fix with the PS2's compilations and I can get all the quickly great stuff that the Dreamcast has to offer.

Out of all the consoles I own I play the dreamcast the most. It's got lots of good games that are cheap and easy to find. Keep an eye open for PS2 deals though. There so many great games and collections for it that are going dirt cheap at every store still carrying them.

I would go with an older console to collect - such as the NES. Games are easy to find and relatively cheap. Reliable working consoles arent hard to find, but systems like the genX and the retro duo are cheap more reliable. In my point of view, the NES has most of the classic originals that are still played today.

Re: what to collect?
I decided to get a black Dreamcast and a Genny. Stupid me got rid of the Genesis years ago with a boatload of games. I play it now on my GP2X Wiz but I'd like to have the real thing. I also grabbed a few games with each. I'll be adding to the collection soon I'm sure.
