homebrews

[final fight cd]

what are some good examples of homebrews? i recently read the thread about pier solar and i am very intrigued not only with the game itself, but homebrews in general. what other homebrews are offered that comes with the physical cart/disc and packaging. any sites or names of games would be helpful.

i am new here and it took me damn near forever just to figure out how to start a thread. so don't put my nuts in a vice if a thread like this already exists.

Are you looking for PC only homebrew? Or all kinds of homebrew including consoles?

I haven't picked it up yet, but I know Rush Rush Rally Racing just came out. Our own Gagaman has a nice unboxing video over at his blog. http://the-dreamcast-junkyard.blogspot. ... acing.html

Also, http://www.superfighter.com/ have put out a few newer Sega Megadrive/Genesis titles recently. Beggar Prince and The Legend of Wukong are JRPGS that both look great, but I have to wait until I can cough up the cash for them.

As far as PC homebrew goes, I would suggest Cave Story, Spelunky, and The Legend of Princess. The first two titles can be Googled, as I've lost the links, but here's a link to The Legend of Princess. http://www.konjak.org/section.php?section=princess

I've also heard good things about Aquaria. I believe that can be found on Steam, and is like a Metroidvania meets Ecco the Dolphin type game. Looks REALLY fun, but I haven't found the time to download and play it yet.

I don't know why no one has ever bothered to have their nice NES or SNES hacks put onto carts. I guess it's because for something like the Dreamcast you only have to burn discs and print up CD case inserts (or have a company mass produce them for you) but for something like the NES or SNES it's more complicated (printing up boxes and manuals is more expensive then CDs, making the carts is more expensive and time consuming, etc).

But at any rate, it CAN be done but it seems the only time it gets done is when some one is ambitious enough to make a single copy for their own personal use. For example, Mario Kart R (a hack the changes all the courses, replaces Bowser with Kirby, and changes a few other things) on a cart with a box and manual...

Mario Adventure for nes is pretty righteous. It's a hack of SMB3. It's got new powers for mario, you use your coins to buy stuff from toad, there are hidden keys that you collect etc. Not hard to find at all.

http://www.romhacking.net is a great place to start for hacks and translations for all consoles and PCs. I second the Dreamcast as having the best homebrew as far as consoles go. A quick google search should get you what you need as far as games go. http://www.undergroundgamer.com has some good ones as well.

I have to mention MUGEN as its a great PC 2D homebrew custom fighting game engine if you like fighters. Theres tons of different versions. Some versions have like 500 selectable characters from all different fighting games to complete custom characters, its awesome.
