*HELP!* Annoying RGB problems on PAL DC

Post by baphomet_irl »

Hi - I've just recntly bought another DC for myself - it is very nice - its a PAL DC in an American 'SEGA Sports' body, and has the black controllers and matching smoke grey VMU (which still had battery contact seal thing on it). Anyway its in very good nick. I also got these jap games: Sonic 10th Anniversary Adventure 2, Guilty Gear X, Sega GT Homologation and Sega Rally 2, and a nice carrier case.

The problem is though, the main reason that I actually got another Dreamcast is because I was having trouble using my RGB Scart on my old one, it would look perfect (and be extremely superior picture quality wise to normal SCART connection), but occasionally it would flicker into an R or G or B overload, I.e. for one second or frame it would be like say -really bright/over saturated red, or blue or green - this would mainly be red though. Originally I thought this was because the RGB scart I got with my first DC was masking-taped together at the DC end (which I know think may have been the previous owner trying to solve this problem), and pressing on the tape or placing things under it seemed to make it less likely to change colours during play. So I ordered a new RGB scart off lik-sang and hoped the problem would be gone. It did happen slightly less, but it was still happening very frequently. I know its definitely on the Dreamcast end and not the scart connection on my TV, as the problem also happened when connected to my friends Sony X Bravia 46" (and theres sure as hell nothing wrong with the SCART ports on that), also the problem doesnt happen at all when using standard red/yellow/white into scart connection. So then I thought that maybe the video port on the Dreamcast had gotten damaged from a cable being shoved into hard or something, so I set about getting a new DC. Yesterday I finally got my new sexy black DC and connected it up to my TV, it was fine for a little bit i thought, but within 10 minutes the same problems were re-ocurring.

Im still glad I got this cool black DC, but still I would really like to get this problem sorted as its really putting me off using my DC. Someone told me that he remembered 'back in the day' people having problems and needing to solder something in their DC to fix it, although he's not sure about this.

I realise that most of the people on this site are in the US, but hopefully someone in Europe can help me out on this one.

Any help is much appreciated.

I used to get this problem a lot, and it was always down to either a dodgy RGB SCART cable (if I wiggled it at the DC end the problem would go away temporarily, I only ever had it with third party cables however) or a dodgy SCART switchbox. If it's neither of those problems, do you have another TV you could test it with?
