What are the Top 10 shoot 'em ups for 8/16-bit consoles?

As a long-time shooter fan, this list is spot-on. May I offer another for consideration, though? Macross: Scrambled Valkyrie (SFC). Three characters to choose from (each with their own unique weapons set), an enemy capture system similar to Darius Gaiden's, and it's tough as nails. For a licensed game, it's excellent.

After playing U.N. Squadron recently, I finally added it as a recommended shoot 'em up. A very impressive early shoot 'em up for the SNES, especially in terms of deep gameplay.
