The Avalanches - Since I Left You
I forgot this was in the 2000s - I'd include it on my list as well!

soniklife wrote:My natural inclination is think that all of the music I listen to is from the 90s and that I don't enjoy new music. And after jogging my mind it is obvious, to me, that there have been some great albums released this decade. In recent years I am getting very excited with new music as there seems to be a rekindled interest in lo fi/indie pop/rock and labels like Slumberland are having a renassiance of sorts. Bands like Vivian girls, Brilliant Colors, Grass Widow, Wavves, Cause Co-Motion, Sandy City, Only Ghost in Town, etc. etc. have all released some really awesome music but some of it is too new for me to add to a greatest of the decade list.

In no particular order here is my list, though I set a rule for myself-one album per band.

-Sun Kil Moon "Ghosts of the Great Highway"
-Explosions in the Sky "The Earth is Not a Cold Dead Place"
-Sonic Youth "Murray Street"
-M83 "Before the Dawn Heals Us"
-Cease Upon the Capitol "untitled" (2nd album)
-Beachwood Sparks "Once We Were Trees"
-The Mountain Goats "All Hail West Texas"
-Karate "Some Boots"
-North of America "Brothers, Sisters"
-Mission of Burma "OnOffOn"
-The Shins "Oh Inverted World"
-The Good Good "A Fem Era"
-I Hate Myself "3 Songs"
-The Twilight Singers "Powder Burns"
-Life at These Speeds "To Your Health"
-Pedro the Lion "Control"
-The Softies "Holiday in Rhode Island"
-Blonde Redhead "Melody of Certain Damaged Lemons"
-Sigur Ros "Takk"
-United States "Divorce Songs" (biased because I released this on my label,, but I stand behind it firmly)
-Loma Prieta "Last City" (same as above)
-The Holy Shroud "Ghost Repeaters"
-Unwound "Leaves Turn Inside You"
-Big Business "Head For the Shallow
-Daitro "Laisser Vivre Les Squelettes"
-Yo La Tengo "And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out"
-Latterman "No Matter Where We Go"
-Converge "Jane Doe"
-Half Handed Cloud "We Haven't Just Been Told, We Have Been Loved"
-And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead "Source Tags and Codes"
-Yaphet Kotto "Syncopated Synthetic Laments For Love"
-Les Savy Fav "Go Forth"
-Rainer Maria "Long Knives Drawn"
-Wilco "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot"
-The Tyde "Twice"
One of the best lists yet.

I feel similar. I do kind of like them, but not to the degree that other electronic music junkies do. I get that the whole thing about how their sound has a sort of future-primitive feel to it, like they are ancient dug up recordings from some advanced alien race that left them on our planet millions of years ago... it's just that I ultimately find them a little boring. I mainly just listen to them to study to and have something good, but not distracting in the background.
You guys need to go beyond their few official releases and find some of their old, rare stuff online - Old Tunes Vol. 1 and 2, Twoism, Hi Scores, etc. Then you might appreciate them a lot more

Not that I need reinforcement to feel better, but that makes me feel better. Every other friend I have that listens to warp/rephlex/idm/whatnot like I do loves them and I just don't.
Download the track "Chinook" off the Maxima or Aquarius 7''. If you like Aphex Twin or Autechre, I really don't think you'll be disappointed. A lot of their older stuff had a harder edge to it, compared to the more mellow stuff now

Twilight singers are great. I like the afghan whigs better though. Have you listened to the Gutter Twins? its the same singer and they are good too.

You might check out Silverfish and Meg Lee Chen.

If the idea of Drum n Bass with actual vocals sounds appealing, check out Kosheen and Breakbeat Era.
Curve's Gift is definitely better than Come Clean... The Secret Meeting - Ultrashiver
Listened to a few tracks, adding both to my want lists. :)
Thanks for the suggestions, I've definitely check them out. Collide has some good stuff if you like Karin's work with Dean Garcia. I love that woman's sexy voice

Best album is hard to say. But best new artist, I'll say Arcade Fire. Not exactly not type of music, but their 2 albums are classic in every way and I got to acknowledge that.

I also like the Libertines from the decade, bought a new perspective on music for me.

Most anticipated release of the decade was In Rainbow for me. Although it lived up to my expectations, I definitely haven't listened to it much.

Most disappointing anticipated albums were Oasis' albums from the decade. They lost directions and then changed directions and had somewhat good results but the music were too different from their 94-96 period which was as good as rock gets and fit exactly my taste. Now they disband which maybe is a good thing.
