Definitive version of Tempest?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

I'm almost positive there's a DS port... hang on

EDIT: wikipedia says Also in 2005, a port and graphical "remix" of the original Tempest was included as part of Retro Atari Classics for the Nintendo DS. This version deviates significantly from the basic rules and experience of the original game

which means if you imported the Space Invaders wheel controller, that would be kind of badass.

The DS spinner works for Arkanoid and Space Invaders extreme. Not sure what if anything else.

It also works for Mario Kart, supposedly.

The ds controller wasn't out back then, so it wouldn't likely work. Asfaik it only works for Arkanoid DS, Space Invaders Extreme 1&2, and Space Bust a Move. It only works with Mario Kart via a action replay code.

I can't say for certain, but it might be possible to hack one into a xbox controller. Which would be pretty sweet because you could make a replica control panel. You'd have to find out if it's possible to output from the encoder to whatever input is used on the xbox controller (I think coinops uses the triggers). Probably best to ask at a more arcade specific site, there's aways a few electronic wizards around those.

Hmm. I have no idea what you'd have to do to interface a spinner to an oXbox. While its controller ports are USB ports I don't think you can interface any old USB device to it, it doesn't have the drivers. Dunno if MAMEoX would support it either. IIRC it doesn't even support trackballs.

If I were you I'd pick up an old computer for $40 off of Craigslist and build that into a MAME box, maybe with something like PIAPARA to reduce the amount of configuration you have to do yourself.

Heh, this is turning into quite the project.

Tempest 2000 for the Jag is the best home version for my money. You could get the console and the cart for pretty cheap. Unfortunately, there was never an official rotary controller made for the Jag, but the game does support it and a few individuals have stepped in and made controllers since the Jag bit the dust. You could get this one at the Goat Store:

http://www.goatstore.com/Products/Atari ... uct=151420

A little pricey, but I've heard its a good controller. Apparently, it's not weighted like you would ideally like a spinner to be, but the controls are supposed to be good. I have a feeling the hack of the 2600 Driving Controller would be even better, but I'm not mechanically inclined, so I've never tried it.

Stay away from the DS compilation that has a version of Tempest. It sucks and you can't use the spinner with it. The DS spinner, btw, is awesome and I pray that the DS someday gets a compatible version of Tempest (and Kaboom!), but so far no dice.

One reason: Tempest 2000 was awarded Best Jaguar Game of 1994 by Electronic Gaming

There is an option to use a rotary controller with Tempest 2000 on the Jaguar, but there are two obstacles. The option must be unlocked by holding Pause on Controller 1 and Controller 2 at the same time on the Options menu.

It sure as hell deserved it, but I don't think it had much competition.

1994 was a great year for video games in general, though, and I think Tempest 2000 holds up as one of the best games released for any platform that year.

Oh, and if you like techno that's so mid 90s it hurts, the T2K soundtrack is worth picking up as well.
