Re: Best games of the decade
Wow, I have to be more specific next time I create a topic...and maybe stay away form the word best. My apalogies. I thought it would actually make the topic more interesting if I didn't make it too restrictive
There have been some thought provoking posts though, not to mention entertaining
Well, people have mentioned a bunch of great games. Some great, some defining and some iconic. Great stuff, here's a few that really impressed me
I know people don't like to give this game its props, because it's too cutesy and not fitting of the macho, hardcore gamer, but Viva Pinata was one of the most original, charming and creative games I've played in years.
I've also been impressed by the rising quality of licensed games this decade. Batman Arkham Asylum really shows how far we've come
Ico, is to me personally, one of the greatest games ever.
We've mentioned the Dreamcast. Sad that this decade brought both the birth of one of the greatest consoles ever, as well as its death. Actually, the failure of the DC is probably one of the most signifigant and saddest things that happened this decade. It was really the last console that really felt aimed at real gamers and we've seen Microsoft steal some of Sega's thunder by taking the online thing and really running with it

Re: Best games of the decade
Personal favorites 2000-2010-ish in no particular order:
- Civ III, Civ IV...soooo many hours
- Portal
- Bioshock
- Half Life 2 + episodes
- Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines
- Perfect Dark
- Phantasy Star Online (Dreamcast) The Sonic Knuckle nearly got me banned
- Alpha Centauri (might have been a '99 release)
- Burnout 3
- Resident Evil 4
- Metal Gear 2
- Jet Grind Radio
- Starlancer
- MDK2
- Anything Timesplitters
- F-Zero (Cube)
- Wind Waker
- Metroid Prime Trilogy
That's off the top of my head. Shame I can't add Might and Magic VI, that's one of my supreme all time favorites, but it's 90s style.

Wow, this has been one hell of a good decade for games. This decade saw the rise and fall of the Playstation 2. That fact alone makes it hard to pin down a favorite.
For that system, I think I most fell in love with Shadow of the Collossus. The game was just beautiful from start to finish. I haven't played any other game where I felt all the elements fell into place quite as well as they did in Shadow of the Collossus. In a word, it was epic.

I have yet to play Shadow of the Colossus, apparently that's a great dishonor to respectable gamers (whatever that means)...but yeah, still in the shrink wrap.J T wrote:Wow, this has been one hell of a good decade for games. yeah, let's not neglect the entire pc catalog of shooters. I hardly see how being second to the party on consoles breaks any new ground.classicgamer5 wrote:I thought Unreal and Quake did that first.newt42 wrote:Call of Duty Modern Warefare

Anyways, gonna throw the Max Payne series in this. Solid shooting, impeccable story and a great modding community. This games always going to be one of my very favorites.
Don't that just look oh so tasty?

Re: Best games of the decade
Oh yeah... bring it on, this is the best topic we've had in a while, enough of those wang-wrangling philosophy whoreoffs:
A. The Specialists - Yea, it's a Halflife 1 mod, I said it. It's also the most orgasmic multiplayer game ever played by urs truly. You've prolly heard: FPS, Matrix-esque, deathmatch, stunts... slow motion. No? Well it kicks some ass, hard, but that boat has sailed, and now this is coming down the pike from the same Itai's that brought me and a few other no-lives to gaming nirvana.
B. GTA III [TRILOGY] - I mean, GTA III's influence is pretty much all over any game which followed. The open-worldedness, the realism (like, not many artificial barriers), the madness, the mood, the explosions. I'll take or leave the characters (except for III's Claude); those games (III in terms of mood and setting, SA in terms of game play; VC was a stepping stone)
kicked ass.
C. Halo also kicked a little ass, but only the first one. Halo 2 was horrid, and I've yet to play 3 or ODST, but I don't want to. Just subtly revolutionized the FPS; I mean, it was mega successful, but can the ability to wield 'nades and weapons at-the-same-time, + weight limitations, + vehicles and pretty good AI +, combined be enough to change a genre? I guess so. Also popularized coops (which ain't no thang!).
That's about it...........for the hardcore.

Re: Best games of the decade
Civilization 3 is probably the most disappointing sequel of the decade for me among the games I actually looked forward to. There were many changes, but 80% of the changes made the game worst. Maybe Civilization 2 was just too perfect.
I have yet to play Civilization 4 as my computers all still lag in the game. (Yes I have crappy video cards)

Thanks Boring Supreez for mentioning Psychonauts, I can't believe I forgot that one!
