"Iconic" and "best" are not synonyms, by any stretch of the imagination. Iconic indicates a readily identifiable image or symbol. The simplest definition of "best" is a superlative of "well," and is a position of superiority or excellence. The two often relate to each other due to proximity (the "best" are often adored by the majority), but they certainly aren't synonyms. But that's me being semantic.
"Best of" lists don't inherently bother me, depending on the context and the submissions. It's simply an excuse to look back and search for that which affected one of our favorite hobbies like no other games could. What's wrong with that? I think the prospect of a "decade in gaming" is a good way to go about it.
There are plenty of things degrading these forums (which I'll leave for another topic), but I hardly think a topic meant for the discussion of gaming should be picked on as one of them. Hell, most of the articles on Racketboy are "best of" lists in some capacity.

You could just, you know, not post in this thread.lordofduct wrote:in the end, I go with Luke... in a more cynical context though. Really... what use is this 'best' crap. Is this what this forum has degraded itself to?
We have lowered ourselves to deploying long lists of what we call best, then telling each other our lists are innacurate based on some arbitrary meaning of words and intentions of OP that are completely contrived. And in the end dilute ourselves into emphasizing our opinions as facts by propping them up on ill-conceived stilts we make out of semantics and non-sense.
bleh

I've decided that the best game of the decade is Shadow of the Colossus. IF YOUR OPINION DIFFERS THERE WILL BE ANGRY CAPS LOCK COMMENTS AND ALL WILL DIE IN FIRES. I doesn't afraid of any of you!

Re: Best games of the decade
I got lost
is it iconic or best?
Both ways you can't skip on these two: Halo and GTA, both are great games and iconic at the same time
I want to add Shenmue in there, it was released in December 29. 1999 in Japan. Come on guys, I think we can bend the rules a little bit.

We would have made a great team in Marketing 6500.lordofduct wrote: in the end, I go with Luke... in a more cynical context though. Really... what use is this 'best' crap. Is this what this forum has degraded itself to?
You always hear bullshit like "America's best selling car", but it doesn't mean anything. There aren't even stats to back it up. What does "best selling" even mean? It "sells the best"? WTF does that mean?
Re: Best games of the decade
Now, now, children, why can't we all get along...
...and agree that Katamari Damacy is the best game of the decade.

Just look at that package. LOOK AT IT.
