Best games of the decade
You know when people talk about enterainment or pop culture, they will often talk about decades and what defined them. We often hear about the 70s, the 80s, etc. Next year is 2010. Ten years since Y2K. I was wondering, what do you guys consider the best and most defining games of the past ten years. Doesn't necessarily have to be the most successful or most popular. We do best of and favorite topics all the time, so I thought I'd try and put a different spin on them

Halo and Guitar Hero/Rock Band
Despite the opinions some of us have towards these titles, let's face it: they've become cultural phenomenons. Halo has helped give rise to one of the dominant genres today, the console FPS, while Guitar Hero and Rock Band practically spawned their own cottage industry. In terms of titles you can approach people on the street about, it's going to be these.

Dungeon Fighter Online for PC. Hmm, what else came out this decade? Meh, I don't remember anything else right now.
Here is a cool video of the Korean version:

Halo and Guitar Hero are definitely on that list. I wouldn't really say rock band, as it's a pure re-release of Guitar Hero, mixed with DrumMania and Karaoke Revolution. Without guitar hero, there is no rock band, etc. I guess it is worth mentioning that RockBand really changed the way the games are created now, though.
Other games that come to mind are Madden 20-everything. Not sure when that fad started exactly but it is a HUGE industry now. I'm not exactly a fan but you'll reach all kinds of people when you talk about madden.
Another giant I must mention is World of Warcraft. I know there were MMO's previously but wow really made it take off and is still far and away the leader on the mmo scene.
I could probably think of others but it's late
.
Maybe throw the dreamcast on this list too. It deserves it.

Good responses so far
I'm going to mention Resident Evil 4 and God of War. The two games that seem responsible for how ridiculously popular quick time events have become
And of course, Grand Theft Auto III. We all know the impact it had and I'm sure someone would have mentioned it in this topic eventually.
By the way, you guys can simply talk about what games have had the biggest impact on you personally this past decade. This topic doesn't have to be solely about what games made the biggest impact on the industry as a whole, though I definitely want to talk about those as well
We can look at this topic as something of a retrospective of the last ten years of our gaming lives.

There's something about guitar hero that makes me not want to play it. Probably because of their big circle charts, the game just doesn't feel smooth to me. Rockband on the other hand is everything that I would ever have thought could happen to music games. Great charts on most of the songs, plenty of good songs to download, charts flow very smoothly and logically.Crystalis wrote:Halo and Guitar Hero are definitely on that list. And I think counter strike got A LOT of people into FPS (I mean my whole school's male population was literally playing it, there's always plenty of friends online in cs back in the days). The concept was simple and addicting.

Without the awesome Bemani series of music games from Konami in Japan, there wouldn't be a Guitar Hero or Rock Band. According to the wiki, Guitar Freaks was released in 1998.Crystalis wrote:Halo and Guitar Hero are definitely on that list. You can play with 1 drummer and up to 2 guitar players (regular or bass is available). At one point in arcades, you could even include 2 keyboard players and have a band with 5 total members all playing the same song together. I used to do that a lot back when I would visit arcades all the time. Ah, good times.
Here is a photo of the arcade machines for DrumMania and Guitar Freaks.

Re: Best games of the decade
It truly shows how retro I am when all the games listed here are titles that I never or barely played (aside from guitar hero), dislike for the most part, exist on consoles I won't bother turning on, and all came out in what I consider my adulthood.
And I never really thought I was retro until now.
