Because it's that time of year, I fired up the Saturn to play a little Christmas Nights. It's been a while since I changed the battery so I checked the on board memory to see if it was still there. It was still there. No biggie, I have things stored on a memory cart anyway.
But, when reviewing the saves, the very first save is titled:
CLOCK__DATA FUKUBUKURO
I have no idea what game this might be related to, publishers weren't always good about making the game save names match up easily with the game titles. Regardless, I find it pretty wild that such a game save title would have made it through to a published game. The save only takes up one block of memory so there's no reason to delete it, but I'd sure like to know what game it belongs to!
Funny thing is that this save is only on the machine even though I regularly save things to the memory cart so I have everything backed up.

Re: Very strange game save message on my Saturn
Okay, stupid me, I didn't do any research first. Fukubukuro is a Japanese word roughly translating to "lucky bag" or "grab bag". It's apparently a Japanese New Year tradition in which retailers make up grab bags full of random products sold at a steep discount.
I completely went to the gutter in my interpretation......
Still, I don't think the game designers took into account that in English that could be interpreted quite a bit different.

Why would they? It's a legitimate Japanese phrase that you saw on a Japanese system playing a Japanese game.
Do American or British game designers take into account colloquial Chinese (the most popularly spoken language in the world) when thinking of save file names?
Fuku = Happy
Bukuro = Bag
Happy bag. My wife buys these sometimes. They have pretty cool stuff sometimes. Even game shops sell them. Buy a Super Famicom Fukubukuro and see what's inside!!!
It's pronounced "Hoo-koo Boo-koo-row". It doesn't sound anything like what you were thinking.
BTW, that save file is from Christmas NiGHTS.

Re: Very strange game save message on my Saturn
Which SNES RPG was it... The group of characters falls down a gap or something and they all say something like "Ouch" but the female character says "I fell on my fanny" or "Ouch, my fanny." Here in America a "fanny" is a more acceptable term for a rear-end, but I've been told that in other lands it's a more crude term for a woman's secret spot. And in the game, the character clearly lands on her front side. I thought it was pretty funny, but I completely forget what game it was in.
I just Googled for the definition of "fanny"
# buttocks: the fleshy part of the human body that you sit on; "he deserves a good kick in the butt"; "are you going to sit on your fanny and do ...
# female genitalia: external female sex organs; "in England `fanny' is vulgar slang for female genitals"

Quite offensive, as well.Ziggy587 wrote:W# female genitalia: external female sex organs; "in England `fanny' is vulgar slang for female genitals"
They all get a good laugh when someone calls a waist pouch a "fanny pack." "You're asking me to put WHAT in my fanny?..." Good times!

Well, since the English speaking world is a pretty big market for these systems and games you'd think they give some thought to localiztion. It's just funny that the language and cultural differences sometimes lead to these things.Breetai wrote:Scooter wrote:Still, I don't think the game designers took into account that in English that could be interpreted quite a bit different.![]()

I've played Christmas Nights for years, ever since I got my copy with my copy of Next Generation magazine so many years ago. I've never seen that particular save file before today.

In England, fanny pack can refer to a group of women.
