My fondest memory of holiday gaming would have to be Christmas 1997 when I got a Playstation

I had asked my parents for months of what I'd want for Christmas, that being a Sony Playstation, I'm sure you know what I mean when I say how I tried to explain to them why I should have another system if I already have an SNES, told them that the graphics were better, the games were gonna be on CD's now, and the games that I had played on it at my friends Dan's house. (mostly Tomb Raider, NFL Gameday)

But I was always told that I didn't need to get one which was ok, they were pretty expensive and I had a paper route job, so I'd figure I'd save over time.

On Christmas moring my sister and little brother each got are stockings, in my stocking was a copy of OPM magazine, which had a preview of Resident Evil 2 on the cover, I remember looking on the back looking at the demo disc. I didn't think much of it, just thinking "cool, I can bring this to Dan's house and check out all the new stuff comming out."

Then later on I was given one of my presents, before I could open it my mother and step dad told me to stop so they could grab the video camera, now have you ever watched the N64 kid? Well I was the PS kid, man I flipped my shit when I opened that up, they also got me Project Overkill, WCW vs. the World, Destrection Derby. Man I hooked that up and didn't stop playing, I was up at 7am the next moring as well, what I was more excited about was using my Christmas money that I had gotten in cards from realitives, threwout the rest of my Christmas vaction from school, I bought Tomb Raider 2, a memory card and one of the games that rocked my gaming world, Resident Evil Directors cut that came with the Resident Evil 2 demo.

Man that was fun to think back on some good times when I was younger, I still can't believe its been 12 years ago.

Thank you for comming up with this topic

To pull this thread back on topic...

The first one I can think of was when I was eight, back in '82. The gift wrapping my parents used on this particular package was a bit seethrough, and I managed to make out a Star Wars logo. Keep in mind I saw this a week or so before Christmas, so I didn't get to find out exactly what it was until Christmas morning. All I knew is that it was Star Wars-related, and I was excited. For all I knew, it could have been underwear, but something told me it was going to be much cooler.

Sure enough, it wasn't underwear, it was The Empire Strikes Back for the Atari 2600. Once we had all of the usual niceties out of the way, I played the hell out of it. I wish I still had it. :(

The other one that sticks out would have been Christmas '89. I had gotten hooked on Castlevania a few months prior when my parents had bought a copy for me. Shortly after that, I had rented Simon's Quest and wanted my own copy badly. However, my parents informed me that they'd searched everywhere and couldn't find any.

Christmas morning, I got to a small NES box-shaped package. To my complete surprise, it was Simon's Quest. My parents had been telling me a half truth, as it turned out - they couldn't find any in the stores, but they ordered it through JC Penney's catalog.

There was one other that sticks out in my mind, even though it didn't involve a present for me. In November '91, I got a phone call from a good friend's mother. She was trying to remember the game he wanted for Christmas for his SNES (which had only been released a month or two earlier). I let her know he was looking for Super Castlevania IV. She then asked me not to say anything. I was a good kid, I didn't say a word. I just wish I could have been there to see the look on his face when he opened his present. I did, however, get a very excited phone call later on Christmas Day, at which point I told him I'd known about it for a couple of months. He jokingly yelled at me for not saying anything to him earlier and thanked me. :)

When I was eight, my cousin came over for Thanksgiving dinner. We rented Diddy Kong Racing (my parents weren't into buying that much), and played for like nine hours straight until dinner, then played for another six. It was a good day.

Another time a friend came over for Christmas, and wanted to play Mario Kart. I had just gotten it for Christmas, so I wasn't that good. Yet, I managed to beat him over 40 times in a row before letting him win once or twice.

Whenever I had Christmas at a different cousin's house, we would have Street Fighter II tournaments.

Christmas 1995.

My parents asked me what I wanted for X-mas and all I said was "Sega Saturn." Some people I knew were getting the new Sony Playstation, but I wanted to play Virtua Fighter and Daytona USA - two of my favorite arcade games, at home. Plus, I preferred the classic 6-button style layout on the Saturn controller rather than the strange-looking (at that time) Playstation controller . So there was no real debate which console I wanted for this Christmas.

Anyway, I remember going to the Electronics Boutique store at the Mall of America with my folks. There was one wall of Sega Saturn game cases and another adjacent wall of where the Playstation games were. I kinda went back and forth between walls a few times just to compare the game graphics on the back of both versions of the same game (Street Fighter: The Movie, NBA Jam, WWF Arcade, etc).

Finally, I asked the man at the counter if I could look at the Saturn box on the wall. He then brought it down and I looked it over in awe. I dunno what you guys thought about the look of this system, but I remember thinking it looked super slick and fucking badass. So I showed my parents and... um, yeah.. they kinda noticed the price tag? $399.99. I heard my mom gasp and my dad shit his brain before finally letting out a "No way! You're outta your mind!!" Now luckily for me, I was 15 at this point so I knew how to debate a little bit and try to make a deal with my parents. It really took some doin and I don't recall what exactly was said, but somehow I ended up convincing them to buy it for me. Just the system, I think it was. But the system came bundled with Virtua Fighter 1 (one of my fav. arcade games) so I was happy.

Christmas was awesome of course. We have always celebrated on Christmas Eve, so I know that I was up until the wee hours of Christmas morning playing VF. And being a longtime gamer, I recall being mesmerized just sitting there in front of my television playing this high-tech, very expensive new gaming machine and realizing that the new generation of gaming had arrived. The Sega CD had kinda sucked in my opinion and so I had passed on it, but the Saturn seemed like it was for real and finally featured "arcade quality graphics."

Unfortunately, my Saturn stopped reading discs and pretty much crapped out this past year. But I do still have the original box with all the styrofoam and paperwork just to remind me of that particular Christmas. My parents made a big sacrifice to come through and buy it for me, and I'll always be thankful for that.

Getting Link to the past for Christmas and playing it non-stop until I beat it with my mum helping with the puzzles when I got stuck. I refused to open that little black book with the hints in it. I wish I still had that complete copy of LttP...

I'd have to say one of my favorite holiday gaming memories would be from Thanksgiving 1989. I had recently been given a Genesis for my birthday and, after picking up my first issue of EGM (#4 - with Ghouls 'n' Ghosts on the cover), I had read about some good Sega Master System games, like Phantasy Star. Also in that issue, the Power Base Converter was mentioned, which allowed you to play all the Master System games on your Genesis. So, I figured the Master System would be worth checking out, since I already had a Genesis and was fairly new to all this Sega stuff, and convinced my mom to rent me one over the Thanksgiving weekend. I remember bringing the huge rental carrying case into my room early in the day before everyone showed up for Thanksgiving, equipped with Phantasy Star, Wonder Boy III, Shinobi and Golvellius which I had also rented. It was a whole new gaming library that opened up to me that weekend - a world outside of Nintendo. I was pretty impressed and ended up getting the Power Base Converter and Phantasy Star for Christmas that year. That Thanksgiving I just remember constantly running back to my room between family members showing up and pickup up where I had left off on the current game. Man, was that a great weekend.

I've never gotten anything like a game for Christmas.

How lame is that?
