Shenmue 3 - Will it ever happen?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

Shenmue 3 - Will it ever happen?

Post by kinn »

I haven't heard anything about this in quite a while. Has anything new been mentioned about this game?

Last I heard was a rumour that the game was all complete and Sega was just waiting to decide which system to port it to. That sounds unlikely to me!

Just wished Sega would just tell us whether or not they have killed the series off. (Excluding Shenmue Online)

It will happen, just wait, I am not holding my breath or anything, or thinking that the game would come out. But I do think are making it as we speak, they might release it sometime in 2009 or maybe 2010 (10th anniversary *wink wink*), lets admit we will never see Shenmue Online outside of Asia, to me personally Shenmue Online is just a way to get some extra cash for Shenmue 3. I know Suzuki-san loves that game, he loves it like his child, he would love to finish it someday. Since Virtua Fighter 5 is out of the way they might be working on it.

I can't wait till we finally get a announcement from Suzuki where he'll most likely say..

I give you VIRTUA FIGHTER 6!"

I don't expect Shenmue 3 to ever be released. The entire series is like a snarling monster in Sega's closet and I think most of the company would rather pretend it never happened.

^Agreed. Sega spent I think over $20 million to produce that game (they only had $100 million to market Dreamcast) and it didn't sell nearly enough to justify it's cost. It's sequal also didn't sell near Sega's expectations. It's a money pit. You guys can keep hoping for a third game, but realize that the more money Sega throws at it the longer it will take for them to get back tho console manufacturing. :x

Just for a little closure on the series I'd take a third installment made with the same graphics engine as the first and second game, They could make it a lot cheaper that way(Maybe they would come out ahead financially also) and we could see the end....Wishful thinking :)

Agreed. Makes a lot of sense to reuse the old engine. I still think Shnemue 1 and 2 look amazing.

I do doubt that we will ever see another Shenmue game especially since the Sega Sammy merger. But Like you say, I would have loved to have had some closure on the series.

Just another question: What is Yu Suzuki up to these days?!? All I ever hear is that his working on Shemue Online. Surely he must be working on other projects too? Checking the credits of VF5 it looks like he had nothing to do with it.

Eventually I think but not for a few years. Probably not until after Shenmue Online is out. I wouldn't be surprised if it will be a 360 exclusive release - mabey move a few more units in Japan that way.
