The original 80gig plays every game I have for the ps1 and 2. It all works pretty smoothly.

The only reason I say this is because my copy of MGS3: Subsistance refuses to work, it just hangs when it tries to load the game. Yet every single compatibility list I've found says that it's 100% compatible...
Could it just be a scratch on the disc? Does it work in a PS2 or another PS3 with compatability?
Disc is perfect, works fine in my PS2 phat and PS2 slim. It gets as far as the Kojima logo and then it either shows the memory card prompt or it goes blank with the loading symbol in the top right corner.

I would say go 60Gb because even if you want the extra space or need it in the future it's Extremely simple and cheap to backup your data, put in a new drive, format and restore. I have one of the originals (4 USB, hardware BC) and I put in a 320Gb 7200RPM drive and it was seamless.

How do you go about doing that? I wasn't even aware you could.

I have some games that have similar problems. Have you tried changing your settings for smoothing and faster load times and things like that.. I have found sometimes that has an effect on a whether a game works. Another problem is some revisions of games work while others dont. As mentioned before, I have the "full" BC 60gig and i have had some issues with freezing and with FMV not playing right.

Yeah I've tried it with smoothing on/off and upscaling on/off. Doesn't seem to make any difference. I was hoping to be able to play all the Solid games on my PS3, alas, 'tis not to be

boy that sucks, I have all the MGS series and they all work on my 80 gig soft BC unit.

I've played some of MGS 2 just to check it out when I bought it used, same w/ MGS3. they seemed to work fine in the sections I played.
Ocelot, did it again...sorry Boss !

The 80GB PS3 w/ BC is done via emulation and thus would be more prone to issues. But as previously mentioned, the differences is quite small and probably not worth spending the extra cash.

Check out Sony's official site here: http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/CompatibleStatus
Wrong, the 60GB/20GB PS3 has the Emotion Engine, Graphics Synthesizer and the complete PS2 slim motherboard inside of it.

The 80GB PS3 has only the Emotion Engine and emulates everything else.

It depends on the SKU. The PAL 60GB are running a hybrid of software and hardware for the PS2 backwards compatibility.
