Sega Game Gear screen not visible, sound not working either

Post by choppingmall »

I hadn't turned on my Game Gear for years but then I turned it on yesterday and the screen is just a bunch of weird lines and I can't see the game at all. No sound except for a couple of sounds that don't sound like game noises at all.

I know that is a vague description. But I don't know anything about Game Gear troubleshooting. Is my Game Gear screwed? I have no idea what to do about that one.

And oh yes I almost forgot to mention, I did try different games but got the same issue.

Search for Game Gear Capacitor Replacement. There's a set to do for the screen and one usual culprit for the sound. Those are common issues to have, though I'm not sure if the screen issue gets really bad if you'll end up with just lines or not.

Thanks for the reply, That requires soldering right? I have never done anything that involves soldering, I am not a very tool oriented person. Don't have any of that kind of equipment. Not sure I love my Game Gear that much. I may just see if someone wants to buy a broken one instead. Unless it's a real easy process.

It's definitely not easy if you have no experience. I changed the capacitors in my Game Gear recently and it was a pain in the neck. Took me the best part of three hours. I suppose someone experienced with decent equipment could do it in 30-45 minutes though
Mostly harmless

I just did the sound fix on one of mine and one for SevinOSeven. I haven't done the screen fix yet as I'll have to buy caps. But yeah, not a first time soldering project. Don't toss the GG though, get it to someome who will fix it even if you don't end getting it back. :)

I have done the cap fix on all 4 of my game gears - as said it isnt easy for someone with little or no soldering experience.

If you attempt it just take your time and do lot's of research :D
