To understand what you mean by failure tell us which current gen systems are a success. Then tell us whats new that they brought to the table and you better not say graphics or better visual output because thats not new. Every system ever made alway tried to improve those aspects.

I am not sure how graphics can't be included, specially this generation since it is a Jump to HD, something totally new you need a special TV set for. It is also funny that you mention "Every system ever made always tried to improve those aspects", because yes, every one except the Wii.

But here is what:
360/ps3: Online gameplay and communities, xbox live and ps3 Home. You can send messages, chat, voice messages, join and invite to games, view games owned and achievement scores. Everyone is upset with Wii's online gameplay

360/ps3: They both bring online video rental services

360/ps3: Mass storage to work as media center, Wii can't play dvds.

ps3: Brings Bluray, its so new it wasn't the standard when it came out. Count the HD out, it utilizes new menu options and has unbelievable storage capacity for a disc.

Lets look at the NEW exciting IPs:

PS3: Uncharted, LittleBigPlanet, Demon's Soul, Resistance , Heavenly sword, Valkyria Chronicles, InFamous, Heavy Rain to come

360: Gears of War, Kameo, Viva Pinata, Crackdown, and Alan Wake to come

Now Lets look at the combined NEW IPs that were simply not possible on the Wii:

Assassin's Creed, BioShock, Boyonetta, Borderlands, Dead Space, Left 4 Dead, The Darkness, FEAR, Mass Effect, Eternal Sonata, Prototype, Brutal Legends, Saints Row, Lost Planet

I didn't even include all the exclusives like Flower, although I bet if it was a Wii title some of you would say its enough to justify the Wii's purchase, I also skipped on titles that are clearly inferior on the Wii(Dread Rising 85/100=360 , 61/100=Wii+2 years late)

I think this is enough new things on the table to call those systems a success. I might have skipped some features.

Ack,
Again I say I do respect your personal taste, but its really hard to tell some one
"Forget about Demon Soul's and Forza 3, MW2 probably is not fun online. You can't skip on Red Steel, Lets Tap, and Ju-on!"
I can say "You must get a Wii because Mario Galaxy is out of this world!" maybe I can say "There are couple unique games to the Wii like Zack&Wiki and Boom Blox" but that is all that I can say.

Prices are pretty close to those games(Wii $50-360/ps3 $60) , even console prices are pretty close, the extra $100 for the HD systems are well worth it you can't deny that.

There are even more games that if they were on the Wii you would argue they were worth buying the Wii for, and they offer something different:
Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, Chromehounds, Star Ocean : The Last Hope, Fusion Frenzy 2, Bad Company, Battlefield: 1943, Call of Juarez, Mirror's Edge, Wet, Ninja Blade, and more

I just didn't list such games because you might argue that other Wii games are equal to them in quality, so I listed the ones where its impossible to argue against.

I don't know-- I think it's pretty easy to deny. If I wanted to enjoy HD, I would have to buy an HDTV, making the price difference between consoles more like $700 than $100.
Systems: TI-99/4a, Commodore Vic-20, Atari 2600, NES, SMS, GB, Neo Geo MVS (Big Red 4-slot), Genesis, SNES, 3DO, PS1, N64, DC, PS2, GBA, GCN, NDSi, Wii

Hey, if it's coming down to taste, I'd much rather play Modern Warfare 2 on a PC, and Forza 3 is out because I don't play racing games...well, beyond Mario Kart. And among my circle of friends, I do tell them to check out titles like Lets Tap and Ju-On.

But if you want more adult titles, why not look into Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, MadWorld, Dead Space: Extraction, House of the Dead: Overkill, etc? As said before, I love light gun games, which is something the Xbox 360 and PS3 don't have to my knowledge(and I'd rather play FPS games on my PC). And you can always recommend the New Super Mario Bros, or Mario Galaxy along with the other Nintendo IPs.

Sort of on topic:

Does anyone else not give a crap about HD? When my roommate moved in, he brought an HDTV with him, and outside of nature programs like Planet Earth, I haven't been terribly impressed with the wonders of HiDef.

Personally, I'm perfectly willing to give up HD on the Wii in exchange for the lower price point and smaller unit size.
Comics, RPG's, miniatures, and now retrogaming? I guess its time to learn to go without eating...

The lack of HD on the Wii doesn't bother me. I focus on the gameplay. However, it would be nice to have the HD option.

I watch a lot of sports and HD is a must-have for me. The picture clarify and the wider screen is a big improvement.

Even in the weakest console generation ever, the Wii is a joke. Honestly... so is Nintendo. Gamers grow up. Companies should grow with them.

But in all fairness, they made a lot of $ with their girly/toddler games and controller gimmick. So maybe they're brilliant and we're the saps?

I'm not much of a online gamer but my Bomberman Blast session last night sure was fun.
360/ps3: They both bring online video rental services
I don't care about this
360/ps3: Mass storage to work as media center, Wii can't play dvds.
I already own a very nice DVD player and sound setup
ps3: Brings Bluray, its so new it wasn't the standard when it came out. Count the HD out, it utilizes new menu options and has unbelievable storage capacity for a disc.
As you mentioned the Wii is sorta weak so no need for huge mass storage :P
Lets look at the NEW exciting IPs:

PS3: Uncharted, LittleBigPlanet, Demon's Soul, Resistance , Heavenly sword, Valkyria Chronicles, InFamous, Heavy Rain to come

360: Gears of War, Kameo, Viva Pinata, Crackdown, and Alan Wake to come

Only interested in Valkyria Chronicles, Eternal Sonata. While I'm interested in any Mario, Zelda, Harvest Moon, Mario Kart and Animal Crossing game. Which are on the Wii. I dislike FPS very much so I could care less about that.
I didn't even include all the exclusives like Flower, although I bet if it was a Wii title some of you would say its enough to justify the Wii's purchase, I also skipped on titles that are clearly inferior on the Wii(Dread Rising 85/100=360 , 61/100=Wii+2 years late)

–noun
1. the favorable or prosperous termination of attempts or endeavors.
2. the attainment of wealth, position, honors, or the like.
3. a successful performance or achievement: The play was an instant success.
4. a person or thing that is successful: She was a great success on the talk show.

Mmmm I wonder if the Wii fits that description.

It comes down to this you LIKE the games on your console I DISLIKE the games on your console. Under your criteria the Xbox360 is fail because it didn't brink anything new to me just like the Wii didn't bring anything to you. Your opinion is your opinion. I don't think the Xbox 360 is fail BTW I just don't want one or have the need for one.
Thanks everyone...
