Dreamcast Modem for copying games?

Post by Ezekiel000 »

I was wondering why the standard Dreamcast modem was never used to copy games? I
know it's slow but is there a technical reason why it's never been done?

Well games can be copied using the broadband adaptor so I just wondered if that is possible why not with the modem? It uses the same port and modems can be links pc to pc afaik.

IIRC you can dump games over the serial port if you don't have the BBA. No reason to involve the modem.

You could do it I think but it would be incredibly slow. Not worth the effort.
Thanks everyone...

I was just thinking using the modem there would be no need for anything extra as all Dreamcast have a modem. It would be slow around 40hours for a gig but it would be better than nothing for people who want to back-up their own games.

Oh well the original reason is because I wanted to get Rainbow cotton and make a back-up to run in lxdream. I'll have to look into getting a serial cable then how much do they cost?

You can look up how to connect your dc to the internet using a pc. It tells you how you can make your dc modem to use the pc as server then access the internet from there. It could give you some insight into modem to pc connection. Your pc would need a modem too.
Thanks everyone...

@gnashvar

That method is only possible on windows 98.

@kingmohd

Unless you have dial up internet it's not possible to get a DC online unless you have a BBA or a PC running windows 98 with a modem.

@OP

If you were to use the modem, and if my calculations are correct, it would take about 3 days on the 33k modem. Or about 1.7 days if you achieve max throughput on a 56k modem (unlikely). Expect an ETA in between 2 days and 3 days.

I don't see any reason you couldn't do it with Linux as well.
