i loooved wonderboy in monster world. shadowrun is probably my favorite genesis game and my 2nd favorite of all video games. beyond oasis is great too, and landstalker is almost as good if it weren't for the frustrating jumps (damn isometric view) and super-hard puzzles (the crypt was unbeatable for me without a FAQ) - can you tell i'm a bit rpg-centric with the genesis? those games are all running around the 7-18 dollar price range last time i checked. comix zone and quackshot are also great platformer-ish games and much cheaper.

Here's a few suggestions:

Shinobi III is a must play. Frankly, the whole Shinobi trilogy on the Genesis is must play material, but Shinobi III was the best in my opinion. Great ninja action, platforming and one of the system's most visually impressive games. There's one screen sized freakish looking boss that is quite memorable

You should try out Streets of Rage II, definitely a defining title for the Genesis. I'd like to recommend the original as well since I loved it, but you may find it a bit dated while Streets of Rage II still holds up pretty well. Both games have some of the best video game music you will ever hear in your life, and the first does have a few neat touches not found in the second game. Streets of Rage 3 can be last on your list. It's the weakest link, but it's pretty good if you play the Japanese version. The US one was butchered and is worse than the original in almost every way, except for maybe it's higher level of difficulty(which is considered yet another flaw by some but appreciated by others)

The Adventures of Batman and Robin is impressive. The S-NES version by Konami is far more faithful to the show and THE best Batman game ever made in my opinion, but Sega's version is a good, challenging Gunstar Heroes style shooter that does some impressive things with the system's hardware and has a pretty decent techno style soundtrack. It's a good game to try out after finishing the awesome Gunstar Heroes

Comix Zone is just plain awesome. If you like beat'em ups or comic books, you will LOVE this game. One of the system's best, yet most overlooked

Subterrania is pretty cool too. It's hard to describe though and rather obscure, but a good game. It's a shooter where you rescue people but you are always fighting gravity

Thanks for posting this thread. I have been wanting to ask this, but was afraid of looking like a noob. Would you believe I just got my first Genesis over the weekend? In fact, it is my very first piece of Sega hardware ever. I'm 27, but was always a Nintendo kid growing up and then moved onto PS and other stuff.

So I got a Genesis 3, an apparently never-before-used six button controller and six games: WBIMW, Flashback, Outrunners (got the boxes with those) and Sonic 2&3 and Sonic and Knuckles. All for $40.

I'm really glad you guys mentioned Wonder Boy in Monster World. I am loving this game!! I had never even really heard of this series before I read a review of the recent MW compilation. I thought the art style looked cool then, and so I snapped up the game for $4. It borrows heavily from plenty of other titles (Zelda 2, Castlevania 2, Dragon Warrior) but puts them in a package that's pretty irresistible. One interesting thing about the box is there's an original retail sticker on the back. The cost of entry in 1991: $58.

Please keep 'em coming. I've read Racketboy's suggestions and would like to know more. Can anyone clue me in to the best Genny shmups?

The Genny is, frankly, not my favorite shmup platform, but it does have some neat titles. Lightening (sic) Force, aka. Thunder Force IV, is actually quite impressive. Thunderforce 2 and 3 are also pretty fun. Wings of Wor , Elemental Master, and Gaiares are also amusing, as is Sagaia (Darius II, I think).

Yeah, I've noticed there doesn't seem to be a lot of them on Genesis. That's why I really wanted to ask the forum folks for the best recommendations. Thanks for the suggestions.
