Just want to say that I went ahead and did the heatgun fix, and it worked. Check it out here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U70SgRDVcBo
Sure it might happen again in a few months, but it's a lot more satisfying than paying $200 to Sony for them to wipe my HDD and give me another 3-month warranty. Plus I was able to back up all my data, and I get to keep the heatgun, for all my thing-melting needs.

My game-related blog.
Re: PS3 Yellow Light of Death
I bought my 80 gig BC PS3 from gamestop used refurb. plus I bought the extended warranty...anyone had a bad experience w/ Gamestop service ? my unit is fine at the moment but I'm just curious. I'd definitely prefer to go to a local shop for service.
Ocelot, did it again...sorry Boss !

If you've got it working now I would sell it used and buy a new one. The "upgrade" will cost you a little bit, but should be cheaper than the repair cost and then you'll have a new system with a new warranty.
Re: PS3 Yellow Light of Death
I wouldn't sell it particularly because of the backwards compatibility. The extended warranty you have now should be fine if it does break.
Although things do break, and yes, this generation of consoles are more fragile than the past, it's not a 360 you're talking about here. I don't think you have to have the same level of paranoia that you would an xbox.

HA...says you...the new ps3 is nothing compared to the old tanks. After 4-5 hours of game play on the new ps3...it pops and crackles when its cooling off...creeps me out big time. I will just be sitting here and hear a crack and its the damn ps3 cooling back off 20 minutes later.
Yep, I know im the one ya love to hate.
Re: PS3 Yellow Light of Death
I also got the dreaded PS3 Yellow "we got you" Light of Death during an on line system update from sony.
Shipped out into Sony service center for "repair".
Had to shell out $162 bucks for that one.
The frustration is mine was a 60gb Emotion Chip PS2 compatible.
Sony's policy is to swap out at factory, by by game saves and downloads.
On Sony's defense did receive back even exchange of original 4 usb with Emotion chip PS2 inside. They did put on a new shell at least.
Here's another one:
The 360 has theirs so naturally competitors have to keep pace:
Red ring of death "can you believe it" on Sony Bluetooth headphones.
Luckily got it to work after few deletes and resets.
Still Sony fan though, I mean where else can you play God of War!

There's a little flaw with that logic. The old PS3s may not be as unreliable as the 360s but, and here's a big but, 360s get replaced for free under the 3 year warranty for RRoD. Sony's PS3 get a piddling 1 year. So within 8 months (possible sooner I don't know when they stopped selling them as new) EVERY PS3 fat will cost you money to repair due to that crap 1 year warranty. The disgusting thing is it's at least £100 to have them repaired, and the kicker, you're not even guaranteed the same console back. So all those people who have hung on to their backwards compatible PS3s may get a shock in 6-12 months when their systems die. Not only have you been stung by Sony for the repair, but you might end up with a cheaper system for your troubles. Bad Sony, VERY bad Sony! That's not on, it's like having your car written off (through no fault of your own of course) and the insurance replacing your Mercedes Benz C200 with a C180. I'd be absolutely fucking fuming. How can Sony get away with that?

Re: PS3 Yellow Light of Death
The worst part was my PS3 bricked during a firmware update on line from Sony website.
Customer support on the phone promised i would get my Unit back.
I verified UPS tracking and as soon as mine arrived in Texas, the very same day another got shipped out to me.
Negative:
Having to pay, ship with hard drive (yes they do require) and wait for repair. Also not getting mine back with all my downloads and saves.
Positive:
Sony provided shipping box by UPS. Got to track daily on line. Replacement is the same model #CECHA01 with PS2 capabilities.

That's pretty bad that you had to pay even though it was as a result of Sony's update procedure. Did you turn your PS3 off while it updated or was it through no fault of your own?

Re: PS3 Yellow Light of Death
After firmware upgrade locked up for 3 hours had to finally give up. Tried reboot then talked to PS3 with a few words very loudly.
