SD media launcher emulation guide

Post by arion »

I´ve been trying out some emulators for the gamecube recentely and i´ve found a few that make good use of the sd card. Keep in mind there are more emulators available for the gamecube i´m only pointing out the ones that allow you to simply copy and paste roms on the sd card. Since the sd media launcher hasn´t been on the market that long many gc emulators are made to be run of a dvd with a modded gc.

FCE Ultra GC

http://gcemu.dcemu.co.uk/fce-ultra-2007 ... 65556.html

A nes emulator for the gc and a very good one at that. Framerate is very good, sound is generally good but certain high pitched sounds don't sound so good but thats a minor anoyance if any at all. It does support saving sdram on memory cards so you can be sure the few nes games that used battery saving are playable(but it cant replace holding down the reset button before quitting:D)

Snes9xGx

A snes emulator for the gc and if you haven´t guessed yet it´s based on snes9x wich is good news and i´d go as far as saying it´s worth it to buy the sd media launcher just to play snes games with this emulator. Sound and framerate are 99% of the time perfect. And it can save sdram to both memory card and the sd card itself. Only downside is you might need to adjust the controls for the gc joypad since the button layout is somewhat diffrent from the snes joypad.

GnuboyGX

A gameboy/gameboy color emulator as usual framerate is good and sound in general is good. And it supports saving on memory card

NeoPop Project

A neo geo pocket emulator. Framerate is good but honestly for me to evaluate how well it emulates wouldn be fair since i have never owned a neo geo pocket. But in general it seems to play well and as usual saving is supported on a memory card.

Genesis Plus

A very new verison of this sega genesis emulator is available now and the most important feature is that it now supports sd cards. Framerate is near perfect but i did notice some minor graphical glitches in few of the games i tried but nothing to serious and the big names like the sonic games and streets of rage had no glitches. Sound however is mostly good but since i´ve been able to play some of the games on the actual genesis console i did notice some sound effects weren´t right again nothing too serious but you will definetly notice a diffrence in some games if you have played them before most noticeable are some of the sound effects in comix zone. And as usual saving is supported with a memory card.

Btw to download any of these emulators you have to register to the forum and download them there.

I look forward to hearing about the Genesis.
I may have to turn this into a guide for the front page.

Racketboy, I've used the GameCube genesis emulator. I only tried a handful of games, but the ones that I did try were perfectly emulated. It's fantastic.

Note: I'm not using the SD Media Launcher softmod, I'm using the AR + SD Gecko. (Shouldn't make much of a difference)

i´ve added genesis plus it was released just few days ago. And i´ll keep adding to the list as soon as more emulators become available for the sd media launcher.

considering that the XBOX and the PSP can do n64 emulation, I don't see why the GCN and Wii couldn't. Plus, as said in the article, the GCN was the first one to emulate N64, officially. Plus, the Wii's virtual console emulates N64 as well. Cool tho!

Thank you for posting all of this great info. I was looking into buying a Gecko adapter to be used with my Action Replay version 1.14b. As I understand it I have to put SD load on the memory card and enter in a very large string of Action Replay codes to make it work.
I am unable to burn dvd's though since I only have a cd burner. Can all of the emulators that you mentioned run off the SD card. I bought one of those Sandisk Wii branded 2.0G SD cards for my Wii but I have not used it yet. Will it work fine with the Gecko adapter speed wise?

Yes the emulators i covered can be booted from a sd card and can read roms from the sd card aswell(only they have to be in a folder named nesroms, snesroms etc depends on the emulator) but im not enterly certain how this works for the wii since all the testing i have done is with a gamecube but i see no reason why a sandisk sd card shouldn work

Very nice. I've found Gamecube emulator info very hard to find and I certainly don't want to deal with those emulators that inject the emulator into every ROM. So this is getting cut and paste into my directory of cool stuff. :)

Apparently ScummVM works with sd cards now (in case you don´t know it runs old point and click andventure games)

http://gcemu.dcemu.co.uk/wii-gcube-scum ... 62699.html

i´ve tried it and i managed to get Flight of the amazon queen running and it plays pretty well aside from the fact that an anlog pin isnt exacly an ideal replacement for a mouse..but all in all a good addition to the gc/wii emulation scene
