Problems burning Saturn games

Post by Perseid »

I don't know if I'm getting bad images or what, but a lot of the games I've been trying to burn recently haven't been working. For example: The Contra - Legacy of War image that's on UG, burned with Alcohol using the Playstation settings is recognized as an audio CD and not a game. The audio tracks even play correctly.

Is it the image? Am I doing something wrong?

Most of the time, burning an image is pretty straight forward. just burn image.

I've rarely had to play with settings, or use a "Playstation settings preset". It's just point, click, burn. People swear by this freakin' Alcohol 120%, I don't really get it, I've used it and all those profiles and other nonsense just feels like to much BS in the way of the real freakin' job. I bought it, I hated it, I said fuck it. I'll stick to the freeby software for burning, and point, click, BURN! Rarely fails me.

Usually when a problem occured it was for:

1) bad transfer, try to get files compressed in .rar or something that also come with a .sfv file to make sure nothing corrupted during transfer.

2) Bad rip. Everyone and their brother today thinks they can rip games. So they do. People like the ones here who aren't really in the scene. Not that this is bad, it just means standards are left out more. Now you get different compression types, differen't storage types for audio, and different image formats. Worse is that during ripping, if you rip just the wrong way something actually could go wrong.

3) Bad originals. Damage to that original? Damn it... and it could be somewhere deep in the game. You don't know. These games are old, those disks probably aren't in good condition and have been bought and sold on ebay 4 and 5 times.

4) Bad media. TAIYO YUDEN DISKS! They are cheap... and they are GREAT! Stay away from the funny coloured disks (purple, black the sort), and stupid shelf brands like Memorex and Sony. These products actually tend to suck in comparison to other brands that actually tend to be more affordable.

Personally I stick to only downloads of bin/cue, iso/mp3 (or wav), or bin/mp3/cue (or wav). Other formats like nero, discjuggler, and other proprietary formats are a sign of some jackass ripping it. Except in the case of strange build images (i.e. Dreamcast games that have been cut to fit on 700MB disks). But for SegaCD, SS, the sort, nero and discjuggler are a BAD sign.

There's bad sources out there you know... for getting a game for free and in what can be a questionably legal way, you should expect a few bumps and lags. Every drug dealer out there expects to be screwed at some point during a buy... you should during a download.

...
heh, I just compared video game back ups to drug dealing. dope.

[edit]
a little rant about that A120%. What IS with that freakin' thing. Why do people love it? Ohhhh, it thwarts some copyright protections on certain disks? I've yet to see it pull it off. It has profiles? And? It has a virtual drive... ok, there's tons of free ones out there too. The program seems large, cumbersome, and like it trying to look like it does more then it actually does. It burns CD/DVDs, thats it, why the hell do I need this giant freakin' program for it.

But then I use GAIM because its straight forward and simple. I don't like bells and whistles, I like my software to act simple, look simple and be simple.

ok, so i'm new to this as well. i managed to burn Panzer Dragoon II using Alchohol format, but now the games I have are in iso/cue/mp3 format, and I've wasted about four discs trying these with alcohol to no avail. so two questions: do saturn games require that mp3 files be converted to wav before burning and what is the best software for burning iso/cue/mp3(wav) formats? thanks.

Nero 5 and 6 do a smashing job. Nero'll even burn with MP3s with you not having to convert them to WAV first.

ok, so i used nero 7 burn rom to burn guardian heores. when I clicked on the "cue" file it gave me some warning message about "line 1" so I just burned right from the iso file. when I loaded it up in SFF, it played the intro cinema but nothing else. i'm lost at this point :(

"Syntax Error in Line 1" ?

Open up the cue sheet in Notepad and show me what it says. This might be your problem.

thanks. I'll keep updating in this thread, but I'm downloading all the games I want from the collection torrent on underground gamer. I don't forsee any problems with those; the place I was getting the isos, cool roms, evidently just sucked. :x
