I played through Persona 3 multiple times, if that's any indication. I consider myself an RPG vet who has grown tired of the genre ever since the PS2 launched, due to how "By-the-numbers" just about every RPG was (and still is).

I would go ahead and recommend the Shadow Hearts series. Unique settings and characters keep it really fresh. The first one is almost a survival horror rpg

Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance 1 & 2, while dungeon crawlers and not true RPGs, they are the best RPG like experience for the PS2 imo. Ofcourse I can only judge by what I have played. I still need to play my copy of Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel though.

Yes. My wife loves playing those games with me. I wish they could make new ones with online multiplayer.

I'm currently 5 hours into Rogue Galaxy and have been very impressed. The battle system is nice as its action rpg based. Also, there aren't too many battles to annoy the hell outta me. The graphics are also very good and the characters looks real (not like miniature, cute-looking models). And it seems the game will introduce a lot of characters like Chrono Cross which I loved. The music is especially well-done staying away from synth/effects and using real instruments with clear melody and harmony lines relying on piano and guitar, reminds me of Chrono Cross as well in this aspect. Overall, I've been enjoying it a lot and this seems like the exact kind of game I was looking for. Everything is kept fairly simple (simple battle system, upgrade, puzzles) just like how I want it with real outside worlds, forests and not some boring indoor dungeon-crawling. I also really like the general mood of the game, it has a lot of nature-summer feel to it a la chrono cross.

I'm wondering, is dark cloud 2 like this? From screenshots, it looks much more cute looking characters and i see some either underground or inside-some-castle-dungeon-crawling looking screenshots.

as far as i know for dark cloud 2 most of the environments are outside to some nature. unfortunately, while nice looking, it can at times be repetitive. i have personally never had a problem with cute looking characters vs. realistic characters before with any game because i feel as long as its fun i like it (this is similar to the problem with zelda: wind waker, A great game that many people i know personally skipped because of which i found to be dumb), so i can't help you with that. also not to scare you or spoil anything but there is one dungeon in rogue galaxy where im sure you will get annoyed by (as it did to me) but persevere and it will be rewarding.

That's the spirit! FF12 is one of my favourite FF games (behind 4 and 11 hah) and is cheap too (get the CE, it is only ~$5 extra and has a snazzy case (as well as a DVD and a snazzy manual)) Can we start an FF10 hating fanclub (although I liked X2 so does that disqualify me?)

By the way, since I’ve been replaying late at night lately, I’ve been sleeping horribly 😅 — found dumbo , a site that helps diagnose and treat sleep apnea online. Might be worth checking out if you’re another nocturnal gamer like me
