So... let's start our own game development group.

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

I might be able to help out with some programming. Depends on the language.

I'm a good guy to bounce ideas off of, but lack all the necessary skills for this sort of thing.

I'm an apt tester, though! :mrgreen:

I always wondered how long does it take to do a game. It seems to me impossibly hard(Something like God of War, although technically all their work would be done on a computer which all of us got),

On the other hand, how long does it take to create platformer like Braid?

A 2d game could conceivably be done by a couple of people with some time. A 3d game becomes much much more complex, and the time invested grows exponentially. Physics, graphics, collision detection, etc are much easier to manage if you only have to deal with 2 dimensions.

Glad to hear it.
classicgamer5 wrote:do you plan on making this from scratch or from an engine?
Depends on the project, though I'm not the one to ask.

There's a part of me that really wants to get into Unreal Engine 3, ever since Epic Games made it free to download. I mean, almost every game these days uses Unreal Engine 3 - it wouldn't be a bad thing to learn.
Well, none of our projects for a long time will use 3D, but if it could be used for the kind of projects I had in mind we'd do and if it could be tooled for the PSP, XBLA, WiiWare, and iPhone OS, then maybe.

Depends on the platform. Right now, our target platforms are:

* WiiWare
* PS Network (PSP/PS3)
* XBLA/XNA
* iPhone OS
* PC (via Steam, etc)
* Flash (for certain projects)
* DreamCast (why not?)

Well, don't worry about the difficulty since all of our stuff will be old-school-style projects, in lieu of 3D.

And also, two new ideas:
Untitled sci-fi platform shooter: in the vein of Commander Keen and Duke Nukem comes ((TITLE TBD)), about a female space captain (think Han Solo meets James T. Kirk, with breasts). Draws inspiration from classic sci-fi serials like Flash Gordon and Rocky Jones.
Untitled shmup: a frantic shmup with a steampunk theme.

I'll have a lot of free time to pursue outside interests in a month...

I'm familiar with most current languages, and I've been using XNA for a while, which is probably the best bet for a PC/XBLCG project, and I need something to keep me from getting rusty once my classes are over :)

Now, I know I've spat out a ton of concepts and ideas, but... does anyone know if BlockOut (3D tetris clone) is copyrighted? And if so, can one make a clone of that which can be sold without getting sued?
