Wii or original XBox for emulator box?

Post by ChimairaGT »

I am looking to put together some sort of setup so that I can play emulators easily on my TV. I have a hacked Wii and an original XBox that is collecting dust that I can pretty easily softmod.

For those of you who have experienced the quality of the homebrew emulators available for each console, which would be better? I am only looking for 16 bit era and below emulation, N64 if possible. I am most interested in info Sega CD and TurboGrafx CD emulators, since I can't find much feedback online, but any info on other systems (Gen, SNES, NES, SMS) is much appreciated

Mod the Xbox and put in a bigger hard drive. It can easily emulate most systems N64 and under.

I would definitely go for Xbox for emulation of classic gaming systems. I would recommend upgrading the hard drive in Xbox. 8)

The collection of emulators on the original Xbox is indeed excellent, but I'm not too happy with the controllers. The buttons on the Xbox controller travel too much, and take a bit too much effort for some games. If I have to rapidly tap a button to keep firing in a shooter for instance, it gets tiring pretty quick.

I'd consider the Wii just because of the classic controller. But I don't have one so I can't advise as to how good the homebrew emulators are there.

Xbox since Nintendo likes to send malicious upgrades to hacked wiis that disable your system.

I turned off my online connection as soon as I installed the homebrew channel. I only did a disk update to play Muramasa because it kept nagging me to upgrade.

Xbox, no contest. You can do more, and better. Better interface (xbmc), huge selection of emulators with good support, and all the other benefits of xbmc.

in all fairness though- the xbox scene has been around for a long time. The hombrew wii scene has been around for like...2 years? Maybe?

I like the wii for emulation only because it lets me use my classic controller, or simply turn the wireless wiimote for an nes controller. It keeps it simple. Plus the Wii lets me use usb drives so if i have say... a HDD with a the ps1 library on it, i can swap it out if i want to without deleting or re uploading. Also- the pointer interface is ideal for scummvm. Haven't tried dosbox stuff on it yet.

There are still some gaps in support for the wii though. No sega CD option for example. Also I'm fairly sure that it has weak mame support.... could be wrong on that.

I have an xbox softmodded too. I prefer it for my sega stuff. I like running sega emulators with a 6 button street fighter fightpad on it. A controller option i don't think the wii has yet. I would probably have more love for my xbox if i could get a damn HDD in it. SO.. I'm a bit biased.

A lot of emulation on the xbox also lets you run roms and games from the disc drive. So if you don't wnat to load those sega cd games into your HDD, you can still play them. Stuff like that is pretty nice.

FYI- there is a character limit to file names on the xbox. A lot of my time is spent renaming games just so it'll fit on that fucker.

X-Box: does everything from the earliest systems to the N64, and it does them well (except Saturn and more obscure systems like the 3DO, PC-FX, etc.).
Wii: no Sega CD, Turbographx CD is a pain to get going and the games will fill up your SD card quickly, Neo Geo is flawed (not full screen, loose controls), MAME is flawed w/load times of up to 30 mins and doesn't play as many games as X-Box, no Playstation, no N64.

Definitely X-Box. No contest.

you can install some hacks to make it skip that disc upgrade check. Not exactly sure where to point you as far as the best resource, preloader used to be the easy way to do it, but i don't know if it has been updated or changed at all over the years.

If you are worried about something like that there are options.... google is your friend.

Also- there is always going to be ways around what nintendo sets up. It is just a reality of what pirates do. Nintendo comes out with something- pirates respond. I wouldn't worry too much. Plus, you gotta be kinda moronic to update your wii with nintendo software after modding. Just sayin no disrespect.
