Blender 3D, The GIMP, Open Office, and Firefox.

I love them all.

They really are amazing. Nothing like free software.

I'm no good with 3D modelers, and Gimp has always done odd things on my computer, so I get by without it and Blender. Open Office is nice though(if you don't mind some of the missing extras), and Firefox seems to be becoming the standard web browser, at least at all the places I've gone to school.

Here's some other nice programs. They are freeware, I'm not sure which are open source.

VLC Media Player (free alternative to Windows Media Player and others, it runs most every format and it does it quickly and efficiently)
Foxit Reader (free alternative to Adobe Reader, which I use because I can highlight text.)
Virtual Dub (Really nice video software for encoding, capturing, editing, etc.)

No arguments from me. They are all great and free. That doesn't happen much.

What makes FireFox better than IE? I've used it a little, but I prefer the layout in the IE7 and I rarely, if ever, have problems with IE. People are really passionate about it though. Am I missing something?

Oh how I love OSS. Portable Apps has really made my work environment so much better - running FireFox portable right now

JT,
In my experience, firefox is less prone to getting shutdown completely by spyware (Chrome even less so, though some contend that it itself is spyware). Currently on my work PC I cannot even use IE since their is an error with it (missing a .rat file).

Firefox also did tabbed browser windows before anybody else, if I remember correctly. I've also had fewer stability issues with it than IE over the years, and Firefox always seemed to handle downloads better.
