IDE hard drives are getting harder to find. I'm toying with the idea of buying an SATA drive and using a converter to make it work with IDE. Something like this:

For $5, I may just buy it anyway and try it out. I'm interested in using this for my Fat PS2 or my original xbox. Would be interested in hearing your experience.
SATA to IDE converter - has anyone used one?

Re: SATA to IDE converter - has anyone used one?
I've gone the other way. I had an IDE drive that I converted to use a SATA cable. I had a good experience with it so I would imagine going the other way would be just as good.

You'd have to use a laptop SATA drive, a molex splitter to give power to that adapter, and a molex to SATA power adapter for the drive. Then you'de have to hope the PS2 provides enough power for both drives, cram it all in the slot (or mod and cut a lot), and then hope the PS2 even likes the adapter. That's a whole lotta ifs.gtmtnbiker wrote:IDE hard drives are getting harder to find. I'm toying with the idea of buying an SATA drive and using a converter to make it work with IDE. Find an old PC that someone's getting rid of or a computer nerd friend that is sure to have some lying around. I've got drives lying around, but I think the largest is 40G.
Check IDE interface down the left here: http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory ... ard-Drives
or Ultra ATA/EIDE here: http://www.pricewatch.com/hard_removable_drives/

Re: SATA to IDE converter - has anyone used one?
Good idea, IDE drives are so much more money than SATA drives now.
Yes, I have used one. I accidentally bought a SATA drive once when I needed IDE so I picked up a converter for it. In fact, that converter is being used right now in my second computer. Works great.
For a PS2 though, I don't think that would work out too good. If you plan on mounting the hard drive where it's suppose to be it might not fit with the adapter. If the adapter will work at all, I can't say.
By the way, your link is an adapter for use on an IDE drive, not SATA. You want it the other way around. I bought mine from some random internet store so I can't remember the name, but if you want me to I could look it up. I still have the box and I believe the manufacture or store name was on it, maybe even a web address too.

Re: SATA to IDE converter - has anyone used one?
For the PS2, I was thinking of just using a converter and having an external SATA drive with its own power supply. Then I would just plug the SATA cable into the drive and the adapter.
I've been fortunate to score two different IDE drives (300GB & 500GB) for under $40 each over the summer but IDE drives are harder to find on Craigslist, especially larger ones. I'm not going to waste my time with a drive that is smaller than 100GB.

I think my link is ok. The one you're thinking of would be something like this:Ziggy587 wrote: By the way, your link is an adapter for use on an IDE drive, not SATA. You want it the other way around. For another buck, dealextreme does have a few bilateral options to go with.

I could be wrong, but the device in your link looks like it's meant to use on an IDE hard drive. I don't see a description on that page. It has a female PATA connector, one that you would plug into an IDE hard drive's male pins. If you wanted to use a SATA drive as an IDE drive, the converter would have to have a male PATA connector. Right? Your second link looks like the same kind of adapter only a different model.

I see your point about the connector. You would need some sort of an adapter/ribbon cable to make it work.Ziggy587 wrote:I could be wrong, but the device in your link looks like it's meant to use on an IDE hard drive. The net adapter is a snug fit on the back of the PS2. You'd probably have to go hacking plastic and/or metal to make room for an IDE cable and power to snake its way out. Maybe it would work with external power, maybe it would think the drive is dead if nothing were hooked up.gtmtnbiker wrote:I see your point about the connector. I also have a slim with a dead laser. I came across this device:
http://www.maxdiypower.com/index.php?gOo=goods_details.dwt&goodsid=128&productname=
It enables you to add a hard drive to certain 7000 models of the slim. It's for $25 and looks pretty cool. There's a thread over at psx-scene discussing it. http://psx-scene.com/forums/showthread.php?t=60119
