I actually saw it at the theater! I had no interest and knew nothing about the movie, but a bunch of my friends wanted to go and I was easily persuaded. Upon leaving that theater, one of them proclaimed, "That was my kind of movie! It had everything!"

I don't talk to those people anymore.
Yeah, don't feel bad, I saw it in theater too, based solely on the premise: Pearl Harbor. I thought "Hey, it'll be an update to Tora! Tora! Tora!" Oh man was I wrong. Oh man...

I'm glad you don't hang out with those people any more.
I was in the midst of majoring in history with a special interest on WWI and II. We were all so stoked to see this movie... thought the same, that it would be an update on Tora! Tora! Tora!. Wow. That is all I can still say to this day.

Okay, you guys have killed all my desire to see the movie now. I'm glad I found out it was lame before I watched it.

The movie watching has really fallen off since the last post in early September, but I’ve seen about a half dozen flicks in the past couple months.

Michael Clayton (2007) – I really enjoyed this film – everything from the plot, to director’s overall tone, to the acting, to the sets and lighting – it was just a solid film through and through. This is arguably Clooney’s best acting performance, with his minimalism during the end titles being something I didn’t expect from him. Even better than Clooney, though, is his fine supporting cast. Wilkinson and Pollack are in top form here, and I actually enjoyed Swinton’s performance – I am not usually a big fan. The film kept me guessing enough, the dialogue was smart, and it is a much better legal thriller than anything I’ve seen in a Grisham adaptation in some years
Grade: 4/5

Texas Chainsaw Massacre (
1974) – A part of me always felt like I should turn in my horror-fan membership card because I had never seen this film (although I did see the 2003 remake). I really didn’t expect the film to hold up to the hype, but it did. Even though I’ve seen countless films inspired by TCM, I still felt pleasantly unsettled in the second half of the film (especially the table scene), and thought that the opening scene with the hitch hiker was a really great way to start the film. Some of the teen-in-peril stuff was a bit cliché even when the film came out, but its innovations outweigh its derivative qualities. Equally worth checking out is the great documentary that is included on the Blu-ray (and I’m guessing the DVD) about how everyone basically got screwed over when payday came – mostly because the film was mob-financed! Overall, this film deserves its status as a classic.
Grade: 4.5/5

The Express (2008) – This film, which focuses on Syracuse running back Ernie Davis, was of special interest to me as Syracuse is my alma mater. It was great to see the campus on film, and I learned something about Syracuse and College Football history that I didn’t know much detail about. As a sports film – this one was a rarity. Usually sports films are really good or really bad, there’s not a lot of middle ground of “decent” films. This is a decent film. There’s nothing especially surprising in the plot (especially if you know anything about Davis), but the story is well paced and intriguing. The acting is adequate, the direction has moments of inspiration, and the score/soundtrack features a nice mix of period tunes and orchestration. If you have even a passing interest in sports, you’ll probably enjoy the film.
Grade: 3/5

Dawn of the Dead (1978) – Every Halloween season my wife lets me show her one horror film (as she isn’t a big fan of the genre), so this year I chose Romero’s 1978 classic. I have a real soft spot for this (and most) zombie films, so it is hard to be very objective in viewing it for the umpteenth time. I can report that my wife laughed at the right parts, and – now that she too is a PA resident – was able to appreciate the local flair in the film (e.g. the scene with the hunters). The film has aged pretty well, and the mix of action/cheese/guts/comedy is still second-to-few.
Grade: 4/5

Transformers 2 (2009) – After I wept openly for several months over the raping of my childhood that was Transformers 1, I finally came around to accept and half appreciate the first film on its own merits (as an over the top CGI extravaganza). So it was with zero expectations that I went into the second film. Whereas the first one had some semblance of a coherent and diagetically consistent plot, this one dispensed with all pretense of logic or fidelity and functioned primarily as a tech demo for the latest in CGI and special effects technology. Luckily for the film, that technology can illicit plenty of ooohhs and ahhs. My home theater was buzzing and my eyes were popping, which is all I really expect from Michael Bay anyway.
Grade: 2/5

Body of Lies (2008) – This was a fun film as well, though it lacked a lot of the “what comes next?” and double-cross moments that I tend to enjoy in spy oriented films. I was attracted to the film because of its talent pedigree – but none of them are really doing anything special here. Crowe’s role could have been played by almost anyone, DiCaprio has played similar roles better, and nothing about the direction of the film strikes me as especially “Ridley Scott-esque.” Nonetheless, the story itself is quite good, and even though it lacks those “ah-ha” moments, it nonetheless keeps your interest. The international cast and the locations are the real highlights here, as they give the film has a sense of authenticity which makes it feel gritty and real.
Grade: 3.5/5

Next Up: With a newborn, I no longer go to the theater. So, next up will be more Blu-Ray and DVR backlog titles, or any new releases that catch my eye…

Last movie I saw in theaters was Boondock Saints 2 last weekend; it was a miracle that it was playing near me and it was terrific.

A Christmas Carol, in 3D unfortunately. The things that I like about 3D are

1. It doesn't even work
2. It ruins the whole movie

There were a couple scenes I liked, Jim Carrey's voice acting was pretty hit and miss with the different roles though (The ghost of Christmas present was so annoying). The movie in and of itself wasn't bad, but I might be biased because I went to see it with an English class and got to miss school.

Why does everyone have a hot nut for 3D these days?
