I will never ever buy Spore, period. And I'm not lying about this. I choose to not support the game Spore because I don't want to give money to a game that has such a horrible DRM method. Now please explain to me how my illegal downloading of a hacked version of Spore is "stealing money" from the game devs. If there is no money to steal in the first place, how can I steal it?corn619 wrote:I'll make it simple to understand Inazuma. The copy of Spore has value, as provided by the game devs. By obtaining a copy without paying the game devs do not receive compensation for the value they added. The fact that you refuse to pay for it because of the DRM is a statement you want to make. However, when you download a hacked copy you are cheating them out of compensation that they would get for the normal channel of distribution. I'm not saying whether or not you should do it. But you need to stop bullshitting yourself.Inazuma wrote:I will never ever buy Spore, period. And I'm not lying about this. I agree, the Spore DRM mess was a high profile example of fail. However, you obviously think the game is worth more than nothing because you still want to play it. If you don't have the willpower to say no, really mean it by telling the developers and/or publishers to stuff it, ignore the game, and (this is the most important part) not argue from the low ground over and over in a thread on the internet, then you are full of fail.Inazuma wrote:I will never ever buy Spore, period. I think that's the bottom line. A lot of "pirates" tend to make these bold statements that try to justify their actions. But really, ultimately I think they're just trying to justify it to themselves.

Funny, because I usually feel like a lot of anti-piracy people just want to ride their moral high horse and feel better than everyone. I'm not directing that at any specific person here. I haven't even read every single post in this topic, but I definitely get that vibe from a lot of other forums.noiseredux wrote:MrPopo wrote:But you need to stop bullshitting yourself.

Personally, I don't have any ethical issues with piracy. Granted, I buy most of my games so the industry is definitely getting money from me, but I've certainly downloaded a game or two at some time or another and I pretty much download ALL of my music. I DON'T view it as stealing like some people do. I just can't in any way shape or form see downloading a file as being the same as mugging someone on the street. You can try and generalize, as most human beings do about everything in life, but it's NOT the same thing
Honestly, given the greedy, corporate world we live in where EVERYONE wants your money, advertisements and commercials are EVERYWHERE and there is a god damn price tag on EVERYTHING, I don't blame people at all if they see an easy way to get something free and do it. Of course, all human beings are responsible adults and have to live with the consequences of their actions and frankly the reason why there is a lot of piracy out there is because they ARE no consequences. The PSP being a prime example.

Because instead of buying a real copy you downloaded a illegal copy. Now if you bought a real copy, then downloaded the hacked version things would be different. At least you supported the developer that way.Inazuma wrote:I will never ever buy Spore, period. And I'm not lying about this. If you don't agree with the DRM methods used don't play the game at all. What you did was kind of a halfassed boycott if you ask me. You only support DRM methods like seen in Spoer when you steal the games online. Its not like theres any shortage of great games with little to no DRM on them. If you want to try before you buy rent or try the demo. There really is no excuse for stealing illegal copies of games online.

I know I'm going to piss some people off here. Not my intention, just speaking my mind. First of all, the whole money the game could be making statement makes no sense. If the person downloading the game didn't want to buy it then the game COULDN'T have made any money from that person. So going by what was said in this post I quoted, NOTHING is being stolen.corn619 wrote:I'll make it simple to understand Inazuma. When you pirate a game your stealing money the game could be making. Also, and this is just how I view things, if you take a game off a shelf and run out of the store, you just stole that game and you're probably going to be in deep shit for it. You're also really fucking stupid. However, if you download a copy of a game someone owns off of the internet. it's really no different from someone back in the old days copying tapes for their friends or people loaning someone pretty much anything that they own. Someone uploaded a copy of THEIR game for others to play. It is NOT stealing. Not in my world view anyway

Re: Piracy is not so bad
I think the whole stealing thing is hard to define actually. You walk into a Gamestop, they have a game setup on one of their consoles for everyone to play. If you played through four levels of that game, but never actually bought a copy of it, are you a thief? Is that really any different from someone downloading a copy of a game that someone uploaded on the internet and playing it? I Played King Kong at a Gamestop once, but I didn't actually own a copy of it until much time later. I saw a lot of what the game had to offer at that time. Was I a thief when I played it at Gamestop? It's their copy of the game and they let other people play it
Just food for though

Let me present a scenario for you. You're at the library and grab a copy of volume E of the encyclopedia. You then got to the complementary photocopier. You then spend the next several hours copying every page in the encyclopedia and take your big stack of papers home. And just to avoid confusing the issue let's say you also brought your own paper and toner. Do you think this is wrong?Gamerforlife wrote:I know I'm going to piss some people off here.
