Buying an SD card for Wii

I've filled up my Wii's internal memory with games and channels and thus the time has come for me to invest in an SD card.

I was just looking for some advice - What's the maximum SD card size that the Wii is compatible with, and also, how big a card is it advisable to get? 2GB, 4GB or larger?

The Wii console accepts SD Cards. Get Wii Menu 4.0 and get the ability to use SDHC (SD High Capacity) Cards with your Wii console with a maximum capacity of 32 GB! MiniSD and microSD Cards can be used with the Wii when they use their respective adapters.

Making sure your SD or SDHC Card is compatible

Not all SD and SDHC Cards are compatible with the Wii console. Please read the following:

* If you have not yet updated your Wii console to Wii Menu 4.0 (how to) or higher, then your Wii console is only compatible with SD Cards that are 2 GB (Gigabyte) or less. Cards with a capacity higher than 2 GB will likely not work with the Wii console if it has not been updated to 4.0 or higher.

* If you have updated your Wii console to Wii Menu 4.0 (how to) or higher, then your Wii console is compatible with SD Cards that are 2 GB (Gigabyte) or less, and is also compatible with SDHC Cards up to 32 GB. SD Cards with a capacity higher than 2 GB, and SDHC Cards with a capacity higher than 32 GB, will likely not work with the Wii console.

* Cards with a slow speed may experience slow transfer time when loading files, or may not work at all. Slow transfer times can also occur with cards that have a great number of files on them.

* While any SD Card with the above specifications may work, Nintendo has licensed specific SD Cards for use with the Wii console. You can identify these cards by the Nintendo Seal on the packaging of the SD Card. The following is a list of known licensed SD Cards and their manufacturers.

So basically, if you're gonna get a regular SD (not HC) card don't get one higher than 2GB. If you're getting an SDHC card, you can get up to 32GB.

I recommend a 4 GB, unless you're planning on loading a lot of homebrew [like a PSX emulator and games] and WiiWare onto the card, 4 GB is about the right amount.

I would also recommed 4 GB as well. I currently use a 2GB but I don't download many games on VC or WiiWare if I can find original games still.

4GB is enough. And don't listen to that nintendo seal crap get any micro sd card.

I'm pretty sure there aren't any non-SDHC 4 GB SD cards. From 4 GB and up, it's SDHC.

Well that's what I thought, but they went through the trouble to put that info up so I thought it was worth noting.

I bought a cheapo 8GB card for mine. Transfer rates are pretty abysmal, but compared to optical media load times still aren't so bad.

I filled the internal 512MB about 3 months back, and had to delete a few big games (Ocarina of Time and others) to make space. The idea of games suddenly vanishing from the online store frightens the crap out of me, so I wanted to get a big enough card to last a while.

I'm probably going to get a SanDisk 4GB, but I might go for the 8GB depending on the price - double the storage for not much more money, might as well...
