Anyone ever use Impulse or Gamersgate?

Post by J T »

I've heard these digital distribution sites occassionally have some good deals. I'm a sucker for a bargain, but each new digital distribution site always wants me to download some new game management client or download manager program and I'm kind of getting tired of that.

Currently, my favorite digital distributors are GOG, Steam, and Direct-2-Drive in that order, with Direct-2-Drive falling into a distant third. I basically only buy from D2D when there is a good deal.

I'm wondering what Impulse and Gamergate are like. Are they just like D2D? What do I have to install to use them? Can I only play their games if I have a game-client turned on, like most Steam games? Is there customer service good? Can you download and install unlimited copies as needed?

I like Steam because I like the Steam client. I don't want to download or be forced to use a new one.

I like GOG because my games are always DRM free and I can make copies as needed. I also like the bonus material they provide in terms of artwork, soundtracks, manuals, avatars, wallpapers, etc.

Would Impulse or Gamersgate be good for me, or just a hassle to add in?

Impulse and Gamersgate are like D2D. I like these kinds of clients because you can uninstall them and leave the game on your machine (unlike Steam). GOG is really the best because they just let you download the game directly.

Impulse is pretty low key. You don't need to launch it to play your games, but if you do keep it minimized in the tray it will keep your games updated like Steam does. I've only bought Gal Civ and Sins off of it, though, which aren't available anywhere else. I honestly haven't given Impulse a real look to see what they offer on it. I only got it because I heard Gal Civ was like MOO2 (it is) and then got Sins because I heard it was awesome (it is).
