Re: Games better on Genesis than SNES?
Since everyone was focusing on games that were better on genesis I thought maybe people would want to know which ports were better for snes.
Zombies ate my neighbors and T2: arcade game( yeah I know it sucks but I love it) snes versions are better than their genesis counterparts. Also the Earthworm Jim was better for snes. In the snes version you can switch weapons... genesis you can't.
Can't think of any others at the moment.

Didn't Zombies Ate My Neighbors and Earthworm Jim both have exclusive content only on the Genesis?

Earthworm Jim runs at a higher resolution, has a higher frame rate, has better music and showcases more graphical effects on the Genesis.
It was originally designed for the Genesis and was only re-released for the SNES later after the Genesis version had become a hit and that says something of the SNES port's lousy quality (Missing music, missing effects, lower resolution etc... etc...) when compared to the original genesis version.

Re: Games better on Genesis than SNES?
I have to say, the SNES certainly had better sound and much more colours then the Genny. And the in house titles by Nintendo were pretty freakin' cool and did things the Genny could only dream of doing.
But there was something for me as a kid when I looked at them that sold me on the Genny, and why I always returned to the Genny.
Now this decission is mostly based on the display technology of the day, where most of us kids were playing our videogames on the older TV set that our parents were probably going to throw away anyway. It was small and usually placed in the basement or something. The console was usually hooked up through RF, or worse through the double prong RF off a ohm splitter (some of you guys may remember those things, it let you hook up the console to what would be where you connected bunny ears).
Now the picture is trashed for these type settings. And the SNES suffered horribly for it. With all its colours, game makers would shove all kinds of contrasting images on screen (Aladdin, which was brought up, comes to mind). This tended to make the SNES's picture look like it was bleeding with colours blurring against each other and generally looking total ass.
The Genny on the other hand would remain looking pretty good with its darker colour palettes of smaller size. Consider Jurassic Park on genny vs SNES.
Same went with the sound. Both consoles would get piped down into some tingy mono speaker on the back of the TV and all the glory that was the SNES sound chip would turn to crap... any of the pretty nuances would disapear. Where as again the Genny's sound, though not as good as if it were through a better sound system, would remain relatively in tact... and seeing as the songs were written with the Zilog in mind, it came across relatively as one would expect, and all subtleties in tact.
Where it came down to completely was gameplay. And if you liked fast paced in your face gameplay. Sorry but the genny served that up superbly. Compare Mortal Kombat on each, though shittier graphics on the Genny, the gameplay stays solid and smooth (well as smooth as a console of the times could be). Oh that and the blood code motha fucka!
Of course all this isn't a given. For instance all the Street Fighter titles were just far better on the SNES gameplay wise, and remaining solid and stable. But still then the Genny controller (6-button) out performed as an input device for fighters. The SNES still had a lot of stuff to throw back during those days, especially in house... Star Fox, Mario, Zelda, F-Zero, Donkey Kong Kountry, Final Fantasy... we could only drool in envy of these games from our genny. In no way does the Genny out right beat the SNES. But at the end of the day, I keep on returning to my good ol' Sega... belch out the "SEGA HICK MY BUTT" every time the logo glistens on my screen (an inside joke me and my brothers had), and enjoy myself a fantastic tromp through timeless games.
Shit I just made a run through Earthworm Jim Special Edition on the SegaCD today (the BEST version of the game, best sound, best controls, most stable, and tons of exclussive including extra level, hidden areas, and weapons... no other version stands up to the SCD version. If you haven't yet played it, PLAY IT.)

Do you mean the music is different, or that the Genny version has higher quality sound, would be a rare example.has better music

Re: Games better on Genesis than SNES?
Yup, the Genesis version sports much better sound given that the majority of the game's soundtrack is rock and techno which are styles of music that the Genesis' Z80 and YM2612 can do very well and quite easily given their FM Modulation nature. The SNES on the other hand operates like a sampler and simply stretches morphs and modulates pre-recorded samples without the ability to generate sound on it's own which makes for high quality orchestral sounds and effects, but very crappy rock/techno effects unless there is a very large sound bank available in the cartridge which was impractical for most companies and often larger than the game's data itself.emwearz wrote:Do you mean the music is different, or that the Genny version has higher quality sound, would be a rare example.has better music
Here's a few examples of Earthworm Jim on the Genesis and the SNES:
New Junk City (Genesis):
New Junk City (SNES):
Down The Tubes (Genesis):
Down The Tubes (SNES):
It's like this with a few other games that rely on a heavily rock/techno soundtrack as well such as Thunder Force III (Genesis) and it's counterpart Thunder Spirits (SNES). Both are the same game, but given the nature of the game's soundtrack it sounds better on the Genesis.
Here are some examples:
Level 1 - Hydra (Genesis):
Level 1 - Hydra (SNES):
Still though the SNES will outshine the Genesis in any orchestral or moody soundtrack (Thanks to it's constant reverb issues.), but the genesis is where it's at for rock and techno tunes.
For example:
Spacey atmospheric rock/techno music:
Lightening Force/Thunder Force IV (Genesis):
StarFox (SNES):
Orchestral music:
Final Fantasy III/VI Opening Theme (SNES):
Castlevania Bloodlines - Stage 2 - The Sinking Old Sanctuary (Genesis):

Re: Games better on Genesis than SNES?
I have to disagree with you own the Earthworm Jim soundtrack. I find the Genesis one unplayable because I can't stand the buzzing sound the music makes and the awful voiceovers/sounds. I guess I was spoiled by the Sega CD version, but I think the SNES music sounds more atmospheric which fits earthworm jim better.

I actually kind of like the color palette more on the genesis version, but still, this one might be up to opinion.Earthworm Jim was initially released on the Genesis and Super Nintendo. The Super Nintendo version has better graphics, with more defined colors and lots of extra special effects, and nearly all of the stages have an extra level of background scrolling. The Genesis version isn't quite as nice, as the backgrounds have a dithered look to them, but it still looks pretty excellent, plus it has one extra stage, Intestinal Distress. The explanation behind this was that the Genesis version was more easily compressed and had the room for the bonus level. Both versions also have different sound synth, and while the SNES version has better (and in some cases, different) digitized samples, the difference in the soundtrack is more a matter of taste.
EWJ2 definitely looks better on the snes though.
Don't that just look oh so tasty?
