VGA Switchbox, any help appreciated!

Post by pelham123 »

I live in a small room in a shared house and play everything off my projector. Problem is I have to swap VGA cables every time I want to watch a movie or play games. I came across this VGA switch box:

Seems to be ideal, I could hook up my PC, Wii, 360 and Dreamcast and also significantly lengthen the life of my projector's VGA port. I've had bad experiences with converter boxes in the past, does anyone else use one of these... what are the chances of reduced picture quality when routed through something like this? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have not used that particular model. However, I have used KVM switches to run multiple machines off of a single monitor, keyboard, and mouse. At least for the KVM stuff, I noticed no difference in quality when compared to a direct connection of PC to monitor. I'm sure there is a difference-- I just couldn't see it, and this was on an LCD monitor.

Heh, I was going to tell you I had an old school KVM with VGA ports that you could have for shipping, then noticed you were in Ireland. The one I have has the exact same top on it as the linked one too, just mine is rotary not pushbutton. My particular box is simply a mechanical switch, I imagine that one is too as there's no reason to have any electronics in it. So if the switch mechanism in that box is decent, the only reduction in quality you should have to worry about is from VGA cable length or using crappy unshielded cables.

Without outside power, my guess is it must be a multiple throw switch, and not use circuitry/optos/buffers etc., which isn't a problem if the wiring is up to par. When you get it, crack it open and check the wiring for proper termination (i.e. solder joints and shielding), and as long as the screen looks good....it must be working good.

edit: Saw there was a sametime post that said the same thing as me.

Go for it. I'll be using the same switch box for my Dreamcast, SNES and Saturn.

If you decide to go this route try this one.

It's $10 shipped and they have a great return policy.

Thanks for all your help guys, I reckon I'll go for it - 13 euro isn't going to break the bank anyway. Cheers!
