Wow! I knew the Modern Warfare 2 launch was kind of a big deal, but I didn't realize the scale until I read this article:
http://kotaku.com/5403788/was-modern-wa ... in-history
It has pulled in more revenue in its first week than any other launch for not only videogames, but also movies, books, and music.
Remember when videogames were just for nerds?
Well, maybe they still are, but there's a lot more nerds with money to burn out there than there used to be.
COD: Modern Warfare 2 is the biggest media launch ever.

Re: COD: Modern Warfare 2 is the biggest media launch ever.
Im not suprised this game was uber hyped, i think for good reason too. I had never seen so many people at my local gamestop and best buy for one game, ever.
and the crowd was pretty diverse, you had your balla ass black guys, tapout wearing bros, vatos, moms, kids, dads, typical fps geeks
so yeah i guess video games are not just for nerds anymore

Re: COD: Modern Warfare 2 is the biggest media launch ever.
This wasn't a surprise. I kept reading that this was predicted. I think the issue that comes into play is the fact that a video game costs $60each, and MW2 had 3 SKU's from $60 to $80, and $150 (although the $150 was limited to the point that it wouldn't bump the avg price up by very much). With that in mind, books cost ~$20, movie tix ~$12-15 depending on your market, and CD's are $10 on iTunes. Bottom line though is the sales for MW2 is pretty epic...even if the game is not perfect.

Don't worry, retro games are still for nerds.

Yeah, but not in units. Not saying that their numbers aren't impressive, it's just that I don't care for their comparisons.J T wrote:Wow! I knew the Modern Warfare 2 launch was kind of a big deal, but I didn't realize the scale until I read this article:

Movie ticket: $7-12usd (standard theater)
Book: $8-20 (launch of hardcover)
CD: avg. $13
Video Game: $50-60
If a ticket to see Dark Knight was $55.99, imagine the money they would have raked in (giving that people would pay that amount to see a movie*).
*as a marketing consultant, I see possible money here. Early movie premiers with tickets charged at a premium. I know at least a baker's dozen of people who would have been happy to pay $20 a ticket to see THE DARK KNIGHT a day early. Not to jack your thread JT, but would anyone else pay a premium for an early screening of a fully edited and final cut of a film?
Re: COD: Modern Warfare 2 is the biggest media launch ever.
Well, it did outsell the top music CD launch (N'Sync) in units, which is particularlly impressive because you would expect the more expensive product to have a harder time pushing more units.
Also, I wouldn't pay extra for a pre-launch movie. But then, I think prices for movies are too expensive now anyways. I don't think there's a theater here in Seattle that shows new releases for less than $10 bucks anymore. And somehow the theater experience seems to have gotten worse as prices have gone up. The money spent on a popcorn and drink combo at a movie theater could have been used to feed an impoverished third world country for a month. And I think people feel entitled to throw what's leftover on the floor because they spent so much on it. I used to like the "audience experience" of going to a theater, but I think audiences are more annoying these days too, now that everyone has a cellphone that even when they do manage to remember to turn their ringer off, they still feel compelled to read their texts and twitter and all that BS that pops up little blue lights in my peripheral visual field. I feel like movie-goers on the whole are just more inconsiderate or mindless or something, but they're not fun to watch movies with anymore. I prefer Netflix and my own cooking any day of the week.

Like I said, the number are still impressive, but I wouldn't be surprised if a Madden title, or others such as San Andreas have also sold more units than an N'Sync album.J T wrote:Well, it did outsell the top music CD launch (N'Sync) in units, which is particularlly impressive because you would expect the more expensive product to have a harder time pushing more units.

This is hopefully the only time I'll type these words, but "speaking of N'Sync", anyone else use to be a big THPS (PSone) nut? My friends and I would play Horse for hours a day. We always switched the letters h o r s e for N S Y N C F A N. Whenever someone lost the screen would inform them that "You are a NSYNCFAN".
Well, it made me laugh.
I would actually pay a premium to avoid the exact same people JT is talking about. I would have paid $20 for assigned seating to see a pre-premiere of the Dark Knight. That way I would have known that the other people who paid extra would also want to "watch" the movie.
And everyone, everywhere owes it to themselves to see a screening of THE ROOM. It's the best theater experience you will probably ever have. And that is coming from someone who has not only been to see the Star Wars trilogy in a theater that had three kegs in the center aisle, but also from someone who has had an entire theater to himself.
Re: COD: Modern Warfare 2 is the biggest media launch ever.
I won't even pay full price to see it on release. Matinee or DVD for me.would anyone else pay a premium for an early screening of a fully edited and final cut of a film?

Hahah! I like that. It reminds me of some the names my friends and I used to use when playing Halo and Halo 2.Luke wrote: This is hopefully the only time I'll type these words, but "speaking of N'Sync", anyone else use to be a big THPS (PSone) nut? We would have names like "a homeless man" or "a little girl" so that it would say things like "You were killed by a little girl" or "A homeless man won".
I used to run side-by-side with a guy and we would be called "Left Nut of Fury" and "Right Nut of Love". We would team up on our opponents so they would be the dick in between us. heh. Yeah, we basically never matured beyond age 13. Halo was perfect for us.
