I did a little more research, and I actually stumbled upon Super Potato's website. According to this - http://superpotato.com/detail/169001015002/ - the price for a Super Famicom with the controllers and hookups is about $37-40. Not sure if this is online-only or if that's how much it is in the store.

I also looked at the website for another store ("Friends") and their prices for SFCs range from $10 loose to $30 with all the hookups. Not sure if they work, though - according to Google Translate, they're defective, and according to Babelfish, they're NOT defective. Uh... huh? *curses self for not knowing sufficient Japanese* The link is here - http://gameshop.ocnk.net/page/47 - if someone wants to take a look at it and confirm (the system listings are at the bottom of the page).
Yeah, $37-40 does sound about right to me. A reasonable price. To be honest, I don't think Super Potato's prices are all that horrible. Some stuff is, yes, but there are deals (or at least fair prices) to be had there.

Your link to "Friends" make me laugh, though. That's the selling list! Meaning that those are they prices that they pay for your used stuff!!! The list on the left is for incomplete items (ie. "defective") and on the right is complete ("not defective").

Oh... ^_^;; (Note to self: find a way to take Japanese classes.)

Well... anyway, I guess if SFC sets will cost that much normally, I'll probably just ask my cousin to get me some games instead (they're smaller and MUCH cheaper) since it'd be unreasonable to ask her to go all over Akihabara and Shibuya looking for deals on an old system - she'll only be in Japan for a week, and will probably be in that particular area for a day or less.

I'm also seriously contemplating getting a SFC from Yahoo Auctions - there are a few up there right now for about $30, used but non-yellowed, complete with controllers, hookups, AND the original box!

Before buying online, I'd wait until after her trip. Give her a price; say 4000yen for a Super Famicom with hook-ups and controllers (or whatever you think is best). If she finds it, cool. If not, then buy online. Buying online will cost more probably, due to shipping.

Come to the inaka, it will soon change your opinion about Super Potato.

agreed!

but if your cousin is only able to go to akihabara to buy games for you and not necessarily to enjoy the experience, tell her to go to the main sofmap store (8th floor i believe?) and to friends. friends is really quiet and not popular, but i've seen really good deals there. sofmap is probably the cheapest you will find of anything in akihabara since it's a pretty big corporation... if you're a politically minded shopper, ask your cousin to go to friends first

If I have to go retro game shopping in Akihabara, I prefer Liberty. Their selection is just as good as Potato's, but they don't have Potato prices. The only downside is that their stores are spread out along the main street. But I only go to Akihabara to go to Hirose Entertainment Yard (aka "HEY") because it is the shmup mecca. I do my game shopping in the countryside.

I am in the inaka now (as I look out the window, I see a small train station, some apartments, and then farms behind that with some mountains further in the distance... including Mt. Fuji on a nice day)... but for a tourist just looking to get hooked up with a Super Famicom that they know is tested and working without having to search for it, I still say it's a good option. Sure, I can buy and old used SuFami for 500yen, but it might not work right, needs cleaning, might be yellowed beyond help, etc. When I first bought one, I had to go through two broken ones (garbled video that no amount of cleaning would help, loose cartridge connector that would only read the cart if it was in there *just* right, etc.) until I found one that worked. Same with Famicoms. I often end up buying two and then Frankensteining them to make one good one.

If you live in Japan... of course it's not a good idea to buy much of your retro stuff from places like Super Potato, but most tourists don't have the time to go looking for cheap game systems as they've got limited time and tons of things to do. Akihabara is a great option for them.

Oh, I do that, unless I really can't find what I'm looking for. Then to Akihabara I go...
