So I'll be in Chicago this week...

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

So I'll be in Chicago this week...

Post by dsheinem »

I'm heading to Chicago today and will be there until Saturday afternoon. I've been there a dozen times or more and have done most of the touristy things, but this time wanted to see if I could find time to do something retro gaming-related.

So, specifically related to gaming, what is worth checking out in the Chicago area?

Game related, there is People Play Games, which is off the belmont stop on the redline, you just go north on clark and its on the right side of the road...the address on google maps might still be wrong, if you want the number I can get it to you. There is also the store I work at which is called the Exchange and that is in Wicker Park, those are all I know of right now...don't forget to go to Kuma's Corner and get a Metal Burger!!

Sorry can't help you out there, but I would strongly recommend eating at:

Superdawg (Milwaukee and Devon, pretty close to Jefferson Park off the blue line)
They have the best hot dogs on the planet, and you would actually pass the house I grew up in.

Backstage Bistro (make reservations) It's part of the culinary school. Viewable kitchen, excellent service, incredible food, at really reasonable prices. I would recommend the three course lunch.

Central Gyros, if it is still there. If not, Kings Gyros are pretty good too. There is one on Milwaukee, behind the house I grew up in.

Superossa Pizza. Mob owned, great deep dish. 'Nuff said.

Oh, and I would avoid UNO's pizza.

Have you been to Harry Caray's? It's in the same building where Capone's right hand man Frank Nitti lived.

I'd also suggest seeing the new sky walk in the Sears Tower.

I miss Chicago. Always something to do, and you really never have to drive if you know the "L" well. Sure you might have to take a taxi to Brookfield Zoo, but it's cheap.

People Play Games is pretty nice. Their prices aren't bad and they have a ton of cart only genesis games.

:edit:
If I remember right there's a pretty nice comic book shop a block or 2 south of the people play games also.

Get yourself a good Italian Beef sandwich. I personally prefer Portillos, but pretty much any place in Chicago will work. I always get one when I'm in town visiting my family.

In terms of things to do, I'd highly recommend the Museum of Science and Industry. If you go, make sure you check out U-505.

Thanks for all the food/tourist destination tips - I do know the city quite well for all of that stuff and already have favorites. I also have some friends in Chicago who know all there is to know on these subjects... don't worry, I'll eat like a king.

So outside of these two stores, is there anything else gaming related worth seeing?

like i said, those are the only two stores i know of, sadly there isnt much else, a few years ago at the museum they had a history of video games exhibit, but nothing much else, on the same street as people play games, there are a few nerdy shops, idk if they carry games though

Mother Hubbards - great, real Chicago bar and eatery in the middle of downtown. Baseball shaped burgers, good beer and real Chicago atmoshperh.

Chicago Oven and Grinder Company - They call it pizza, but think calzones. It's fantastic and they use REAL ingredients (wait until you see the mushrooms they use). It's also in a class Chicago house that's been turned into the restaurant, and it's across the street from where the Valentines day massacre happened. I'd say towards the North Side on Clark on the way to Wrigely.

I'm full of stuff like this. I made it my mission to live here and find all of the real stuff to do and have gotten so good at it that I realized I haven't done the touristy stuff in 15 years.
